Do I have standard mk1 Gti callipers?

Post

Hi all

My brake pads rattle like crazy over uneven road surfaces (as well as crashing and banging from the suspension, but that's another story) and although the rattle clips are there I want to replace them and add some goo.

Before I do that can anyone confirm what calippers I have? Picture below and they have vwll embossed on them.

Are they standard for a late mk1 golf gti?

The clip kit says they have to be the winged type pads for the clips to fit but I'm not sure what that would look like.

Any help appreciated.

Steve

They look like mine. my pads have a V shaped spring on top then the clip retainers sit on either end. Mine is 1.8L cabriolet which is same as GTI I believe.

No, they aren't standard MK1 that I have ever seen.
You are missing the proper brake caliper carrier, as in the second photo by shubbs.

I have used disk quiet on the fingers of the calipers and the perimeter of the piston to prevent brake squeal, as it is superior I do believe, and a little goes a long way to making them quiet and keeping the better 3/4 from asking why they squeal.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

The more I look at your brakes…..how does your pad stay in if you don't have carriers??  i thought you had just taken them off for the photo……….. but i think I see something holding your pads in. It looks like somebody has cut off the outer wing / bar of the carriers. Which could explain the rattling.

i will get a clearer photo of mine also.

I think they look similar to mine but not identical. Mine have VW II on them but other side of the caliper has something I can't get photo of as the carrier is in the way.

Yeah looks like your pads are held in by something but looks to me like the outer bar of your carriers has been cut off.l or something. See markup. Red circles looks like might be cut here and red line shows the outer bar missing possibly. Look at my photos in comparison to yours. 62f68d5ce2050~2.jpg

They are standard mk1 brakes, but from an earlier car. sorry Briano but you are not correct. There are 2 types of carrier for the same caliper. Sometimes people fit the earlier type to gain clearance for different wheels.

Ok interesting. So if that is the case, does it mean the pads and anti rattle clips are the same regardless of calipper carrier type? All just mk1 golf gti? or do I need earlier pads and clips?

The advert for the clips says they only fit mk1 golf gti with 'winged' pads.

Are mine winged pads?

Appreciate everyone's help so far!

Hey something else I just noticed. Are your rattle clips installed properly? Look at my photo versus yours. Looks like yours (see photo with red circles) they look like they sit on top of the carrier between the carrier and the pad where as mine fit between the carrier and the pad on the down leg not on the top.

Yeah I noticed that but are you sure yours are correct?

Based on this thread below I'm not sure they are?

Not saying mine are right by any means though and I'll try it the way yours are and see.

Yeah, I "think" mine are correct………. I do know for certain that mine don't rattle though.

And in the video in that other thread the movement of what they guys is doing is in the opposite direction to how the "spring" would help so I think mine are correct. The spring helps with the linear motion between the carrier plate and the pads not "above" the carrier plate and the pads. Or that's how I see it.

I was looking at the pictures at the end of the thread, but I'll try it like yours. If they don't rattle I'll take that as a massive win! I'll report back once I get a chance to do it. Cheers for your help.
