Cv boot kit expired 6 years ago. Bought on ebay.

Post

Bought a genuine VW cv boot kit on ebay, the seller never mentioned dates and the one pictured had the expiry date sticker ripped off. Item description read "new, genuine and unused"

Got it in today (not the one pictured) but its expiry date sticker still intact dated July 2010

The rubber feels pretty hard but strong, no sign of any perishing, what you reckon?

I know I could get a refund as it's not as described but what sort of issues do you think I could have?

First of all we can't see it mate.  ;)

But for me if it looks new, feels and smells new I'd keep it.
If not I'd just send it back as above.

But sell by dates, it's not like a fresh cream cake or something!

The rubber part looks okay, I doubt the grease would have a use by date so why would there be one at all?

Seems a bit strange,

I stuck a 'split down the length' boot on for the mot and it lasted about a week before the cv grease started coming through. So I need to get this new one on asap.

Don't buy a split down the length boot people, they are useless. It uses superglue to bond but superglue is not flexible so it's just a matter of time before it cracks.

the boot wont expire thats for sure, and i cant see how the grease could either. What happens when you fit it to a car that magically stops it going out of date?

I mean sitting on a shelf its going to have a nicer life than spinning round at speed, or during the winter while being attacked by salt…
