Golf GTi 1983 Tin Top
Hi all i have recently bought a Golf Mk1 1983 Gti for restoration and need some help with getting it running after being sat for 6 years
Ok it took a few attempts on getting it running by winding it over and then it fired up and then stops wait a few seconds turn the keys it runs fine and then stops.
So after checking over the basic stuff cant see anything that would cause this.
Am i right in saying this year DON'T have the pump in the tank? there is a pump outside which is constantly on soon as ignition is turned which is quite loud i think this has been wired to run when the ignition is switched on.
Any other things i can check or do?
I am mechanically minded just on diesels though, not had an old style petrol engine for over 20 years
Any help will be much appreciated

The fuel pump should prime when you turn ignition on but not run continually. The tin top doesn't have a lift pump in the tank as you say. If the car has been sat for 6 years without turning, I'd say you'd need to do quite a bit of recommissioning before firing it up. Have you checked you are getting fuel through the system? Is there rust in the tank? Fuel filler neck rusty? Hopefully it should be easy enough to diagnose if you work through it methodically.

Fresh fuel, clean the tank, check good battery, check fuel pump is pumping by loosening fuel filter hose, change fuel filter could be jelly fuel in there. Clean or change plugs. And good dose of easy start . If possible try another fuel relay, if you think is faulty, always good to have a spare.

So a quick update on this.
I managed to get it running. Disconnected the fuel lines from the tank put them into a jerry can of fresh fuel, and cranked it over then I noticed fuel spraying out of the main fuel line, so the dude i bought it of mentioned something about he replaced it with a flexi hose and where he joined it to the fuel pump hose it was leaking.so after doing a quick hillbilly repair job cranked it over for few seconds and she's running,
Didn't run smooth until I give it some revs but I think that's down to plugs and leads etc.
But the main thing is the engine seamed sweet so will get stripped down and new gaskets etc
Now onwards to pull it out and get on with the resto
