Year and model would be nice to know.
Fuel Injected (which type) CIS or Digifant
Carbed and which type of Carb.

Then when it cuts out, what type of cutout is it.
The engine Only dies and the Tach goes to Zero?
Or does the entire car shut off as it may be Electrical.

Why, because which type of cutout, depends on the answer.  The more information you give out the better your answer is going to be,

84.5-93 Fuel injected has a Intank pump, usually before the main pump stops working there is a loud Whine from the right side rear wheel arch, that you can hear.
This is a sign that the intank pump or filter sump is restrictive.

On 84.5-89 CIS cars, the fuel pump relays have been known to have Cold solder joints, stop working….engine dies, when the relay cools off the relay starts working, then rinse and repeat as they say.

Does it happen on straight-ways or when you turn the car, as that is also a indication of what may be wrong.

Electrical issues can be bad Earths, Bad Batteries, to worn out ignition switches and 3 pounds of Keys and fob accessories that pendulate and on a turn the weight causes the ignition switch to turn off… (been there on that one with one of my kids.)….

It can be other things, as well.

So if the engine dies only, the Tack goes to zero, the oil pressure gauges go to zero but all the dash lights still have power, and your radio is playing….

Just a few reasons as to why folks are asking for more information than just the car cuts-out.  The more specifics that you give up front the faster and more often accurate diagnosis usually follows hand-in-hand.

Or maybe a alien ray which has stopped all electrical devices…… :lol:
