Correct dash/instrument panel for 1987 Golf Cabriolet GTI Quartett

Post

My quartet which I will start restoring soon had a few replacement parts from the previous owner and they are actually not from the original year or type.

I have a wrong grille fitted for example. I am wondering if my dash is ok but couldn't find related information and decided to ask you guys.

Which dash is the original for my car?

The one I have on it, is with the petrol level indicator under the rev clock and the water indicator above the warning LEDs and an LCD screen below these warning LEDs which is not operational at the moment.

I have been told by a mechanic (not a trusted one but was enough to got me thinking) that all the GTIs are supposed to have the water and petrol indicators under the rev clock next to each other and a "shift-up" indicator above the warning LEDs.

If you know a website or similar I can find some info about the factory fitted dash according to model & year please let me know.

Kind regards

Placement depends on the year.
While I am not a Expert, I do know that the Various styles changed the layout of the gauges over the years.

A Photo of your current dash would be nice.
I do know that on the back of it there should be a year sticker on it, and the Mylar circuit-foil.

To my knowledge which is small and only regards tintops, the binnacle with the shift up indicator/fuel economy gauge, and the water and petrol gauge side by side are fitted to the 1.8 gti, not the 1.6..

the clocks with economy gauge are fitted on 83 gtis and campaigns, not sure when it changed but don't think it would be on an 87 20171109_190617.jpg

I just didn't want to remove the dash and look for the label for now but once I remove it I will definitely check that label. Thanks for the tip.

I can upload a photo later today…

I actually downloaded that brochure but didn't realise it has a GTI dash picture  :)  It seems the one I have matches with the one shown here

You are right mate. Also it seems I'm missing the indicator needle for water temp as well. These are the things you realise after you buy the car.

Are there anybody who can post a few pics for the correct switch arrangement for a 1987 cabriolet gti?

Also any idea what is this LED for above the fog light switch?

Cheers

The order is correct but the wrong placing.
The blank should be at the bottom.

It is probably for an old alarm or even a fake one

The switches just clip out, I can't remembered they clip out from the back or front, there is 2 tabs which hold them in place, simple job just check you are not pulling wires about and make sure the battery is disconnected before messing about back there.

As above, remove the surrounding trim, just use a small flat screw driver on the side closest the clocks gently pry it out.

Remove stereo and then push the switches out from the back.

They have 2 spring clips either side.

The hazard switch can be argumentative but be careful with it because if it comes open you may have tiny springs all over the place

Ok guys.

Once I collect a few items and start the  restoration, I'll get them to the right order.

It's all personal preferences…. Just be sure that you place a bit of Heat Shrink over the Hazards bare blue/black wire as it blows f19, and you probably will need to change that fuse the first time after trying to get it off….

Sure there are Pure-est's out there….

I've got a 1988 car and my switches are on the left like in the picture above, just in a different order with the blank panel (with the red LED) between the heater rear window and hazard switch…

Only the headlight switch is on the right…

Mine looks like this one….
