Changing rear suspension

Post

Good Morning

I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to working on my car unfortunately, I’m looking to change my rear suspension and was just wondering what is the simplest way of doing it? Do I clamp the springs and undo top and bolts or is there an easier way? Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Remove the complete strut from the car.

The bottom bolt is the one you can have problems with if it's rusted in place, loosen the nut and check you can turn the bolt.
The top you need to hold the shock shaft in place to undo the big bolt holding it in place.

90% of the time you don't need to compress the spring on the rears, when the strut is out of the car start to loosen the locking nuts and check the spring cap is lose or you can push down on the spring by hand before removing it completely, if its still under to much pressure then use spring compressors.

I would say that is a understatement, they are a PITA the first time that you change your rears out, and I am talking new off the showroom, and 80K miles later….
Every Cabriolet that I have owned I had to cut them out.
You can replace with a grade 8-10 bolt from a hardware store.

The Steel Bushing in the middle of the strut mount can Seize to the Bolt and you can't knock it out. So you end up cutting the bolt on the inside of the mount… I can remember using a hacksaw blade with tape on the handle…

If you have access to a Saws-All, they make quick work of the bolts.  I have also used a Torch to get them out.

Going back you Mummify or wrap that bolt with Teflon tape Head to Thread, and slather it with Never-sieze, then they will never get "Frozen" and do this again.

The rears don't require compressors for the springs they  aren't under a load really.  The fronts DO and can seriously harm you (KILL  YOU) without the compressors.   I have a How-to on that as well.

How far do I tighten this nut that’s in the boot? I’ve fitted rear coilovers used the same nuts as what was used on original suspension.

Also should that nut be that high up as it wasn’t that high on the original suspension
