Centre instrument console

Post

Mk1 GTi engine code EG

Hi,

Am fitting a centre console in my Mk1.
It came in a box of bits with the car.

The instruments all seem ok.

Am unsure what it fastens to at the gear-lever end.
There is a hole in the moulding which is central
but if I fasten it down using a slightly longer bolt into
the rearmost gear lever securing plate bolt hole the gear lever
is quite close to the back of the hole where the gaiter fits.

If I place it with the gear lever central when in neutral it appears
to be too far away from the under tray at the front

Many assistance very much appreciated

Thank you

Well on the cabriolet with air conditioning there are two mounting tabs at the top that screw in at the heater box sides, and then one screw in the middle of the very rear that bolts to the tranny tunnel.

On the non-a/c I think there are brackets. Screen Shot 2018-06-10 at 11.50.39 AM.png

ps I usually leave the two top ones off, and secure the console at the rear tranny.

Might you have a look at the etka for the parts breakdown as it is a good place to see where all the stuff bolt to.

The rear screw is a self tapping type thread, not a bolt. If you look at the black metal plate on the tunnel where the gear lever bolts on there should be a raised tab behind the gear lever, that's where it screw's to. As above the front should have a lug either side to secure it to the dash under trays.

Hi

Many thanks for that
Most helpful.

Had a look at mine - no raised tab behind the gear lever
but the car had been 'butchered' by a previous owner to be used
as a track car.

If I secure the console with the gear lever in the neutral
position as close to the centre of the gaiter hole as I can
do you think that would be about right?

Again many thanks for your assistance
Very much appreciated.
