Broken Speedo needle

Post

Hi
I'm gradually working my way through a seemingly endless list of issues with a 1991 VW Clipper Cabby 1.8cc.
Next up is a broken speedo needle, which I am hoping to be able to change. I don't want to change the original complete instrument, if it's at all possible.
Can anyone out there help me with a buckshee needle, please?
Happy to pay and meet p&p costs.
cheers

Broken needle?  is it truely Broken or "Popped" off the shaft.

Buying a new set of clocks off ebay or forums may be your easy way to do things.  I can rember breaking the needle as the tool I was using to "pop" the needle off slipped when I sneezed (hate when that happens), and I was able to re-attach it to the center stalk with a Modicum of Super Glue and Built the Back side up with Super glue and baking soda.

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Hi Briano
Needle is snapped off near the centre stalk.
My options seem to be :
new needle;
glue existing needle; or
new clocks.
Hoping that someone has some old scrap clocks lying about which might provide a donor needle.
On the glue option: can you explain the baking soda bit, please?

To remove the needle without damaging anything…

When you have the instruments dismantled and ready to pop off the needed get a thin bit of card and cut a slot about 30mm, slide the slot through the shaft the needle sits on to stop marking the face of the speedo and use a fork (dinner table fork) and slide it underneath the needle with 2 prongs of the fork on each side the use the fork to lever the needle off the pin. It should pop off in 1 peice unless someone glued it back on.

You will need to calibrate the needle by lifting it over the pin at 10mph which it normally sits on and you will see a same white dash on the speedo face, line it up with that make when putting the needle on, lift over pin in rust position.

I did just plug in the speedo and take th car for a drive with a sat nav to check the speedo is right, VW are usually 5mph ish over read so you can if you wish get it nearer to correct?

Tried to remove needle without success. Firmly stuck. So I broke off the remaining segment of the needle altogether and replaced it with a piece of plastic salvaged from an Airfix kit and superglued to the central stalk.
Looks ok. Worth the trouble set against the cost and inconvenience of  new clocks.

Looks ok, I would replace all your Bulbs since you have it out.  Also if you take the Green Film out, that is usually cloudy, which you can sand with 3000 grit, then polish clear to get better less fragged lighting.

You Break the heat welds on the Bulb Cover, then the Film will lift out, then you can reattach it with either Epoxy, or Re-heat weld it in place.

Good advice, Briano.
I have ordered new bulbs and will clean up the green plastic before they arrive.
