Brake pedal to brake linkage rod length - solved!

Post

How can I set this....

Hi folks,

Need to re-connect my brake pedal to the rod that goes through the bulkhead to the main linkage. According to Mr Haynes there is a set measure for this (well 2 in fact, but I'll come back to that).
Given that my linkage is all bolted up in the engine bay, I can't remove the rod in question as the rubber grommet/bellows thing must go in from the engine side. Any suggestions as to how I can set the measurement - is there some other way of making sure this is set up correctly?

On the measurement front - it changed at a certain chassis number. Now, possibly a really dumb question, but how can I find out my chassis number? I looked at the VIN plate, but the only number on there starts VWWV or similar whereas the chassis numbers in the Haynes are fully numeric - and long - and bear no resemblance to anything I can see.

Cheers.

Jason

Thinking about it logically, the master cylinder has a return spring and the servo-linkage-brake pedal is unchanging (except when you adjust the length or the servo operates with the engine running during braking) so the net result would be the brake pedal height changing when you alter the rod linkage lengh.

If you haven't altered the clutch adjustment (or its not an auto!) then you can "work backwards" and set the brake pedal height relative to the clutch pedal, I think its 20mm but its in the Haynes manual too.

Cheers Paul,

I've actually just stumbled across this post from a few years back which is basically the same question.

you answered that one as well!

Thanks!

ETA so long as the 2 linkages which turn the mechanical effect 90deg are operating more/less in the middle  of their sweep, it would be okay there.

Unfortunately, clutch pedal is disconnected as well!
I'll see if I get the rod out from the front, measure it, mark it, and refit.

Thanks again.
