Hi guys this is my 8th breakdown in a week I cant get to the bottom of it I have an after market immobiliser cobra 802t it was playing up and causing the car to not start just cutting in whenever it wants took it to an auto electrician within a minute got it started said it was a faulty relay all good drove it home did it again. He bypassed the relay and re did the wires .now it wont start rang him said said it's a lazy starter motor banged on it with a hammer sure enough started again .so seems plausible. Driving today after it starting first time no need for a hammer and its cut out mid drive wont rev no power again wont start power for the heater lights etc no power to start the car. Banged on the starter nothing checked the new immobiliser wires all good no breakage so I'm at the side of the road right now cant move so please help

any luck with it?

to rule out starter next time it happens run a live wire direct from battery to the red/black wire spade on the starter motor. while here make sure the spade is clean and tight. if the starter cranks when jumped direct, check ignition switch wiring and the alarm gubbins. to rule out ignition switch unplug it and loop a wire from red to red/black see if it cranks over.

its worth having all the starter, battery and alternator cables off for a good clean up. the gearbox earth goes to the bracket on top of the gearbox, this can get corrosion buildup underneath, to rule that out put a jump lead from battery negative to one of the bolts holding the starter on, if it cranks up lovely then sort this out.

later mk2 and mk3 moved the box earth to a stud on the end of one of the 2 upper bolts holding the gearbox on, fit one of those and either redo the earth entirely or run a cable from exisi8nt earth point to the new point. I like to use a complete set of mk3 golf cables nicked off a 1.8-2.0. grab a 2nd earth from another mk3 and chop it down so you have a length of wire with a ring terminal either end, bolt one side to the chassis earth point and the other to the ring terminal in the middle of the 1st earth

Thankyou so much for your reply you were the only one …I got it going again and took it to my mechanic the starter motor was shot .but also he noticed that there was a leak coming from the inlet manifold where the rubber grommet is which was spraying water onto the starter motor and causing it to short out so we had a new manifold gasket and grommet and new starter motor wires .seems great but now it wont tick over ??? Revs and pulls great but struggles to idle only when it's hot though ??? The battle continues

is it still on the original 2e2 carb or has it had a weber?

the 2e2 needs coolant flow for the autochoke and waxstat to work properly so if it was leaking before its possible it wasnt getting good flow and someone has fiddled with the settings to compensate for this

if its a weber just may need idle and co tweaked

alight cool, have a look at the rubber flange under the carb maybe it got split while all the other work was going on. if oyu have the standard airbox make sure you have the mount at the front which bolts to steady bracket on cylinder head otherwise the carb flops about too much and splits the flange

I asked as you said it had been dripping onto the starter casing. This part number is the Mk2 Golf version, 037 911 045(1989). The same picture part number 36 911 023F/C or 5 911 023A is listed for the Mk1 version. One of those part numbers may be an end cap as its hard to tell clearly. The brackets are attached to the engine block and starter end. It might be that yours is missing.
