Airbox too big.

Post

Hi Guys.

After rebuilding the missing parts in my new mk1 gti and its mk2 gti KR engine i have discovered that the airbox is too big. The bottom half of the box was missing and now i know why. Its makes the whole airbox too tall.

My question….

What can i replace the airbox with? Am i restricted due to the metering head system??

All your help is really appreciated

Thanks
Adam

I had same problem
I bought one off eBay which chips in to plastic top of metering head
It's just alloy frame with like a piper filter type glues to it
I made a frame for legs to sit so was not screwing in to the inner wing
I try find it about £100. But saves lot work sounds ok as well

I used a pre-90 mk2 16v airbox with most of the bottom cut out and shaped to sit on the chassis leg, you need to use a 90spec mk2 16v upper boot or on mine I used a mk1 8v gti one which will streeeetch over it just about but its a tight fit! the pre-90 rubber boot is far too tall to fit in a mk1.

edit: oh and if using the full 16v management you need a 90spec plastic pipe as well as it has the outlet on the bottom of it you need on it for the over-run cut-off valve, the pre-90 has the pipe for this on the side of the rubber boot

Hi, I too used a cut down 1990 spec 16v box and reformed the base using a small fibreglass kit you can buy from most motorfactors.

Its pretty easy to do, put some kitchen tin foil around the chassis leg (to stop the fibreglass from sticking to the front leg), place the airbox ontop and then build up with the fibreglass. I have some pics somewhere…

I do have a cut down 90 spec airbox and a pre 90 16v one spare if you need one, possibly have the metering head rubber boot too, but would need to check.
