AEB engine conversion

Post

Hi looking for anyone else that has used the aeb engine for their 1.8t conversion

Hi, I am a newbie to the club and indeed forums in general so apologies if I don't just get all the forum conventions and acronyms.

I have recently bought a mk1 gti fitted with a 1.8t aeb engine from a passat, in fact from the trawling the forums it would appear the previous owner was or still is a member and had posted some of his trials and tribulations of his build some 10yrs ago.

AlthAlthough a lot of the car is there it was bought as a rolling chassis / unfinished project. I have seen quite a bit of info about agu engine conversions but less on aebs and was looking for help / images to help complete the turbo pipework, cooling pipework, oil breather pipework and sensor connections.

I Have done quite a lot of searching before asking for help but apologies if i have missed something.

Thankyou in advance for any info or advice anyone is able to offer.

Looking forward to getting it back on the road and meeting everyone at the agm or other meets.

Kind regards

Damien

Aeb is longitudinal in the passat so not the best engine to start with in a golf. I think you need to swap alot of the parts from a transverse 1.8t so not many use the aeb in a golf. Not very tunable either as no one chips the ecus any more and only 150bhp stock.

Yes unfortunately you only reinforce what I have picked up from the various forums etc and deep down know that a complete swap out to an agu or such is probably the right answer or even going back to an original engine, however knowing the car has been running and with limited funding after buying the car I feel like I want to at least get this running as is and get some pleasure out of it whilst deciding on a long term route and looking for an engine etc.

Although I'm just making an assumption, and I'm afraid we all know what they are, I would have thought that as you have had it running most of the hard work is done and most of the bolt on items would be of the same basic design so your breathers, intake manifolds ecu etc could be interchangeable with other 20vt motors rather than starting over?

Hi there thanks for the reply. Yes unfortunately it was the previous owner who had it running not me, but I have seen a video clip of it running. Unfortunately time then got the better of him after he took some some of it apart to fit an updated turbo. So I don't think it is far off just not to sure of some connectors left hanging and some cooling, breather, intake pipework that need finding / fitting. I will get there by trial and error but just thought it would be handy if someone had done something similar so I could compare !

Hi, I would try to research as much as you can find for any 20v conversion and follow it, I don't think you'll find yourself too far away. I'd try to find as well about things that are different for your code as to a higher output versions (cams, manifolds etc) so you know what the limitations are internally with your power plant. There are plenty parts available should you want to upgrade in the future, and likely to be just spanners to change them out.
Good luck!

Howdu bud. Thank you for your advice. I have taken it on board and yes I have been too focused on the aeb and starting looking at more agu / 1.8t mods which a lot appears to be similar with the aeb. engine I have been able to identify where a number of connectors go and some more of the piping and hoping to make good use of a weeks leave next week to spend some time under the bonnet.
