Additional front fog lights

Post

Does anyone know if its possible to wire in additional fog lights to be used instead of the main beam ones?

Ideally ones that come on with the second click of the stock fog light switch

Thanks all

Might be helpful if you let us know what sort of Golf you have and what year it is?

I know my 1988 cabriolet has the wiring already there to plug in fog lights, there's a yellow cable and plug underneath the coolant expansion tank…

Not sure how they work etc but at a guess it’s probably wired up like the rear fog light as you need the headlights on for the fog lights to come on so I guess you would need the main beam lights on to get the front fog lights to work as that’s what fog lights are for… to use when it’s foggy unlike loads of muppets I see driving around with side lights and fog lights on usually in the rain blinding on coming drivers….

Can't argue with that! It's a 1988 and it's just a base model as far as I know

So if i have the plug already its just wiring? Do they work from the second click on the existing switch only or would I need the full beam on as it is now?

I usually see people with fog lights on when it isnt even foggy. No one seems to know the highway code for fog light use!!

I found the wiring you described. A white plug with 2 fairly thick "yellow" cables. They are partly yellow and mostly black from 30 years of dirt!!

Do you have a link or know where I can buy the extension to run down to the front bumper?

If you're fitting "additional lights" you may have to make an extension .

Later Mk2 Scirocco had front fog lights fitted as standard so might be worth looking at them ?

campaigns had fog lights from factory, they have different lenses than driving lights that come on twin light grills.

just make sure the lamps are actually fog lamps, as wiring main beam lamps to come on in the fog would be a big mistake.

when fitting front fogs you also need to change the wiring slightly, otherwise they will get lower voltage than they should.

for CE1 fusebox this is dead easy, first drop the fusebox off its hangers and look for the grey/yellow wire plugged into the back, pull that out. dig a bit more and find the other grey/yellow which wasnt plugged into anything, then join them together. put the fusebox back in the hanger, fit a 53 relay in slot 7 and a 10a fuse in slot 6. done :)
