What is the difference between an ABS MC/servo and the equivalent non-ABS parts?

The master cylinder, indeed the whole braking system, must still be able to function in a basic (non-ABS) way even with failure of the ABS function, so the module is designed "fail safe" to pass through the pressures in that condition, and the MC would still be working normally too.
The MC might have and extra sensor or two, but these would not affect its main function.
You've been very general and not mentioned any particular make/model, it might well be that it has different dimensions or fittings etc which make it, whilst possible, a PITA to adapt to a Mk1 Golf and totally unsuitable.

Thanks Paul, this is seriously helpful! I'm looking into fitting a G60 mc and servo on a Mk1 GTI. Pretty common upgrade, just wanted to do the homework first as some are advertised as ABS, some non-ABS and others with no mention of ABS at all.paul_c said
AIUI the plumbing for ABS is that the servo/MC are essentially the same, but then all the brake pipes go to the ABS module which has a pressure accumulator and a bunch of valves, and can overcome the normal pressure to release/reapply each of the brakes as needed. The module is the bit which does the "clever" stuff.
