ABF with ZX9R Carbs - Running rich!

Hey all, long time since I've posted on here! But after getting my MK1 on the road after 4 years of being built you may see a little more of me - In have an ABF in my MK1 running ZX9R carbs (Keihin CVR carbs I believe)
- 180 jets as recommended
- Currently 3 and a 1/2 turns out on the pilot

I ran it as the above and the car is still running too rich (plugs coming off sooty black). I then progressed to lean it out by removing the 0.6mm shims from the needles - running better but plugs still coming off black!

My next thoughts is to try a different jet (perhaps 170-175 even though the 180's seem popular) or perhaps it's time to take it to a rolling road? I guess they should be able to sort these niggles?

Excuse my impatience but BUMP

People seem to run huge jets like 220 but that would make mine even richer! I'm tempted to go smaller on the jet than my current 180 so it's leaner. Perhaps 170-175 although this doesn't seem the done thing?

Thoughts? SURELY there's someone on here with a bit of bike carb knowledge?
