91 GTI Cabriolet fuel pump problems

Help required!

Hi Folks hope someone can help, I have had running problems with my Young Line GTi when it gets hot the engine cuts out due to lack of fuel. On closer examination I found the wrong pump and filter have been fitted when I had a new fuel tank fitted! Plus they have cut pipes and cable tied in the filter. The 'garage' that did this has since closed so I am looking for someone in the North Surrey area to collect the car and sort? I have a long list of the parts required, to aid and garage. Really gutted as the car was going to be on show outside Goodwood House on Sunday!

Carbed or Digifant fuel injected?

Is there a Loud whine to the fuel pumps from the drivers side rear wheel arch when this happens?

Hi thanks for responding! Yes there was, but have spoken Mark at Classic VW and he pointed me in the right direction,! The parts fitted by the local garage were ok, just lashed in! It seems to have been a faulty earth on the secondary pump in the fuel tank. Have rewired and seems to be OK but cant take it for a road test as it is like a monsoon here!. Have re-fixed the pump and filter properly now with made up brackets. Run car till it is very hot, all OK and the fuel pump is not getting hot now! So fingers crossed. Thanks again

Bad Grounds are the Bane of these Critters more so than the MG/Austins Sprites that I cut my teeth on.

Both Fuel Pumps are run off the same grounding point, so it the in-tank one was wonky, it would cause the main pump to whine about overworking, and it would usually stop whining after about 20 minutes or so and say "Enough, I quit". Then after cooling off for a wee bit it would change it's mind and work it's heart out for another 20 minutes until it had enough again stops and cools off, as the shampoo bottle says, lather, rinse, and repeat.  I must of gone through a whole bottle of that in my youth until I figured out once was enough and 47 times too many.

Running a car in the red and putting a couple of liters of fuel in it until it is in the red again isn't good, as between 1/2 and 1/4 of a tank of fuel, the in-tank pump tends to over heat and die after a while… If possible it is better to have more than 1/2 a tank as the in-tank pump uses the surrounding fuel as a coolant and a lubricant…. Just saying after having Daughters blow through fuel pumps in Various Cars including my Cabbies.

Thanks Brian that is exactly what was happening, the main pump was getting hot and not supplying enough fuel. I too cut my teeth on MGs/Austin Sprites. My fave was my MGBGTV8 Chrome bumper sold it for school fees! Worth a lot now! I have a question for you, if you dont mind? I have just had my instrument cluster overhauled and the LCD display still does not work. It has worked on and off with the MFA button working too, but alas no more. Any ideas? Cheers

Ground or power to pins 2 earth, and pin 14 black.  There is also a ground from the valve cover to the Coil bracket.

I am not that up on MFA's as I just have an LCD panel.

But here is the Bentley.
