1983 Rabbit GTI Murdering Alternators

Post

Hello,

I have a 1983 VW Rabbit GTI that has been going through alternators and regulators like crazy. I think I'm on my forth or fifth one in the past year or so. It is the 1.8L gas with out A/C.

I have heard some things about ensureing the alternator's ground cable is connected and working, but other than that I am very confused. Why is it going through so many?

I know she's an old car but I dont like my Rabbit chewing through alternators this often!

If you have any tips or experience with this issue please let me know!

Thanks,
-Jeff V.

Too much belt tension.
Bad Ground between the engine/transmisison to frame horn and from frame horn to battery post.

Bad B+ Cables from the alternator to the starter/battery.

Clean and replace all grounds that you can find.

A battery that is iffy can cause issues as well.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
