Do you still have the standard air box and hot air feed from the exhaust manifold?

Good , waste of time the bolt on air filter as you don't get any cold air going into the carb as it's placed at the back of the engine, cold air means better performance. In the winter the carb can suffer from freezing as no hot air feed from the exhaust manifold.

Has the problem started since having the engine in bits or Webber fitted?

It happened before I had the engine work and carb change

the only thing I haven't changed is the dizzy, point and condenser

What year is your car?
If you still have points have you checked the gap and looked for any pitting?
How old are your points and condenser and do you have a dwell meter to check the gap or feeler gauges?

Did you fit a new rotor arm?

In my 1978 Mk1 Scirocco I used to change my points and condenser ever year as the quality of new parts seemed to go down hill, I've since changed mine to electronic ignition with a Accuspark kit, best £25 I've spent.

I don’t think the stuff above will help with the cold start and rough running when cold but it will help with performance, petrol consumption and reliability.

Did you get the Webber set up when fitted and was it new?

It a 91 H reg

havent looked at the points or condenser yet

where did you get a accuspark for £25 ?

ive got to get it back to the garage so they can look at a oil leak so will get them to check it all out
then eventually it will be set up on a rolling road to iron out the rough running just lack of funds at the mo is restricting me

H reg 91 car will have electric ignition, VW changed from points and condenser in 1979 ish.
No need to a rolling road set up, local friendly garage which does MOT will have a CO meter to set up the carb, there is a mixture screw on the side and a idle speed to adjust that's all you can do unless you take the carb apart and change over the jets in the carb.

pull the carb and adaptor off, check condition of the rubber flange. if split replace it, and make sure the steady brace from the airbox to the head is there otherwise the new flange will split again
