Discussion on fuel pump setup for a Mk1 GX receiving a 1.8 16V KR

Hello all!

I've been search the forums and seen a few posts about people engine swapping the 1.8 16v Kr engines into the Mk1. Ive recently bought a Kr from a mk2 Gti that I'm rebuilding slowly.

My next headache point is what do re fuelling…

I originally thought just buy/salvage the fuel system from a mk2 Gti but I read somewhere the lifter pump won't fit my current tank..

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I can setup/ use for a fuelling this engine in a Mk1.

This is the first engine swap and rebuild I've done and I'm loving the learning process so please be kind, we all start somewhere.

Cheers

Everything* from a Mk1 GTI hatchback?

* Fuel tank, accumulator, fuel pump, fuel pump cradle, brackets on the car, fuel pump relay and its wiring, fuel lines front-rear. I think you could reuse your fuel filler neck, breather hoses, tank level gauge sender unit (if you block up its fuel lines)

Cheers Paul. Sadly I've thought this might be the case. I was hoping for a modern solution using different pumps that might achieve what's needed without needing to change the tank!

Will look into getting those bits! Cheers

TBH you might be able to buy a generic or aftermarket electric fuel pump which can also suck the fuel up thru the lines (the GTI pump was mounted lower than the tank…..) and can probably do variable speed running etc. But I don't know of one. It would need to be wired into a GTI or similar fuel pump relay so it could prime for start, but shut off if the engine stalls or a fuel line sheared in an accident etc…..
