Looking for info
Hello,
I'm in the process of restoring my 78 series 1 GTi.
Does anyone have a set of good/ used or NOS oversized cast pistons for the 1.6 EG??
Also, what are the gear ratios for the original GE code 4-speed trans?? I've looked at several gear ratio charts and searched with no luck…
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Chris

There's a guy selling new cast oversize eg pistons in Austria on German Ebay. They are Hungarian pistons but seemed to be the only ones available. I've just bought a set and my mate is currently having some put into his block at the engine builders so have yet to have any feed back.

or search on german ebay

No table seems to list the GE code. My mates 4 speed is a GE so I know they exist.
1st is the same as all 020 boxes I imagine. Maybe you could look in the parts book and that list the number of teeth and work it out from there?

I think GE code maybe the same as GC but not 100%

Wow!
Thanks so much for the info guys!!! That is an excellent lead for pistons!!!!
As for the gearbox, I have been researching.. for now, I have figured out that the GE box has a 3.70 final drive, and the GC is 3.89 ( I believe )
I will post more as soon as I learn. It may come down to counting teeth, so I will do that if need be. My gearbox is now broken apart..
If anyone else has any info, it would be greatly appreciated!!-

Further research of the GE transmission gives me the following information:
GE 4-speed final drive / ratios-
Final drive - teeth- 74:20 = 3.70 *specific to GE code*
1st gear - 38:11 = 3.54
2nd gear - 35:18 = 1.94
3rd gear - 36:28 = 1.29
4th gear - 31:32 = .969 *specific to GE code*
The eBay seller mentioned above is out of stock on the O/S pistons. If anyone else has a lead, please let me know-
Thanks

Thats hard luck on the pistons because he's sold a few sets over the last months. It was the only lead we found.
