to cut a story short im contemplating driving to austria for a festival next year its around 1000 miles each way, the reason being that its a festival organised road trip where you have stop offs where you do challenges and stuff of the like, and ive been on a coach to italy and theyres some awesome scenery :D
ive got a standard 1.5 gx with 93k on the clock and nothings gone wrong with it since ive had it last november

so is this gonna be a stupid idea or is someone with me on this lol

http://www.snowbombing.com/en       thats the fest and in all fairness it looks AWESOME

or has anyone ever done that long of a road trip in a mk1?
any opinion is welcome :)

Honest answer, looks awsome mate, I would give it ago, if your mk1 is good to go then why not, just make sure you get plenty of phots for those of us not lucky enough to do it
You get my vote, remember its a golf its bound to make it.

I took one mk1 from the UK to the French Alps, then back again six months later, then back out to the Alps a few weeks after that and had no problems at all.

I've also done a trip from the Alps to the West coast of France and back over ten days, involving loads of driving, no problems apart from the odd refusing to start when the Golf was warm (hoping the fuel pump replacement this week will fix that problem). Also did a trip over Europe's highest road down to Nice and back the next day - loads of driving in hot weather and no problems.

I think I've been lucky, to be completely honest (the current Golf is a lemon).

Snowbombing has a good rep for a party and they do beachbombing (or used to) in summertime. Enjoy! Don't forget to check what you're meant to have in your car for the drive (eg, in France you need a reflective vest and triangle), and check that your insurance covers you while you're on the continent.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

First one was a Rivage. Current one is a Quartet, so both 1.8 GTi cabbies. Great for summertime road trips.

I'm just worried about the amount of petrol I would get through over the 1000 miles lol

Really no idea at the moment as my car has been out of action for more than a month (mechanic aren't fast 'round these parts) so I haven't been filling up. A mate told me they've come down a bit now that peak holiday season is over….was up to €1.45 last time I filled up which was ridiculous.

Looks a well organised trip and well worth doing. Over the years I've been abroad in mine 20 times, including Austria. Only breakdown was caused by filler neck corrosion and floods in France. As long as it's serviced and checked over you should be OK and if anything happens you can get cover. What you should watch on that one is if the worst should occur - and it won't - is what happens if cost exceeds car value. Make sure it'll be fixed or repatriated.
I was in France in June and fuel price was about the same as here and in Austria in July I think it was a bit higher, 10%, something llike that, won't make much difference.
Go for it - you'll have a great time.
