Hello first off sorry if this is the wrong section for this

Now it's getting colder in the mornings my van don't like starting it takes a few times at heating glow plugs up before it will start and when it does start it smokes really bad but after a few seconds it stops smoking and runs fine

Thanks for it help

There might be injection advance, cold (high) idle or something like that, but since its a Vauxhall Movano…………….

Anyway, sounds exactly like a glow plug issue, either they're not firing, or the temp sensor they're linked to is faulty, or the glowplug timer or ECU etc etc. Best to find a Vauxhall Movano forum and ask there.

Bugger, didn't realise it was a Vau . . . . daffodil, back to General Chat  :redfaced:

I used to have a Merc people carrier and had a problem with it starting in a morning Autumn / Winter, once warm ok but first thing an absolute pig and even had to jump start it a few times. Turned out it was carboned up etc, needed stripping, de-carboning, new injectors, glow plugs etc. Set me back £1,500  8O  8O Ran like new afterwards though

Park it on a hill….

Assuming its an old school indirect injection diesel and not a new direct injection festooned with electronics, 99 times out of 100 poor starting when cold is duff heater plugs (or poss the relay that runs them).

The only problem being that old fashioned diesels where outlawed when new Euro4 (3?) emission controls came in about 10 years ago so you may have a newer motor that needs a main stealer computer to tell you its going to cost £££££.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

wht year movano and wha engine has it got in it?

i work on them day in and out, prone to glowplug problems in the newer models. they work on a circuit, so if the block/engine temp is high enough they will not b needed in staring up, but first thing in the moning when its cold, they will be needed, thus taking a while to heat up and your van to fire.
it'll smoke till its hot enough.

take they plugs out (bit of a chore if its a od fashioned 2.5 or 2.8 naturally aspirated as they are in the front of the head and quite iddl to get at.
the newer models are easier to get at, but it you snap one off in the head, you'll never get the stem out.

forgot to add, once you get then glowpugs out, test them on a battery to see if the glow, i' guess that maybe 1 is actually working, which is why its being a chore to start.

hth and if you want any more help, let me know.

Brillant thanks for the response it's a 2000 reg 2.8 so looks like it's going to be a pain to get plugs out

If I leave it till mid day and start it it's fine would this still be glow plugs

Thankyou Luke

the 2.8dti version don't have glow plugs, they have a different system. i'll have a double check tomorrow at work, as we replaced the preheater system on a customers 2.8 the other month.
i can find the part number and try and get a photo of what you need.

they won't be under the rocker cover.
if i remember, there is a bit of pipework with a sensor type to the top right of the airbox coming from the inlet manifold, in there is the preheat system. think its a main dealer part only, but i can find that out too and a price. (we use renault parts for all our movano's.)
give me a couple of days to get a look and a picture.
