Why does it always happen to me!!...
ok,
So I went and bought a X reg GOlf Karmann i..Looked over it and it seemed fine and off I went to drive it home from Bexhill to Lewes.
Went thru Laughton never exceeding 50mph as she had not been run for a while. On the long straight into Ringmer I heard a ticking noise coming from the engine which seemed to be getting Louder..I pulled in and as I did so there was a clanky clanky noise..The type that normally means lots of money..you know the one..The engine had not overheated and was only warm..No bubbling water from the radiator tank etc and no obvious signs of anything wrong.
Now the car wont turn over at all..Just get a clunk from the starter motor..Fully charged battery etc..
Stripped out started and it turns over fine when not in engine.
Cant turn over engine by hand either vis the crank pulley..even with large socket and wrench..
Took the cam cover off and all seems to be fine but did seem a little dry to me..thought there would be more oil in there…but then again never looked in the engine before so I may be wrong..
So Any ideas…apart from its buggered that is…which I think it probably is

I'm sure I recognise that car from this forum, not so long ago. Nice colour. How much oil was in the car when you set out at the start of the journey?

lots of oil..to the top mark on the dipstick and nice clean oil too…
Think the engines seized myself.
I may have founf a complete 1300 engine with gearbox..Can I use the 1300 enginew with the 5 speed gli gearbox..I belived they will fit mexhanically but is the gearing ratio different..
Or does anyone have a 1600 engine?
You know,,.this time last year I bought a VW T2 bus and it also blew up just after I bought it…Not having much luck I feel

The 1300 engine won't fit onto the 1600 gearbox. You're far better (and it will be easier to find) with a 1600 or 1800 injection engine, there should be one or two in the Parts For Sale forum, failing that there's the Wanted area.
It sounds like the engine's thrown a rod, or one of the big end bearings has failed in a catastrophic way.

8O ooooh that sounds bad, have you spoken to the guy you bought it off? despite all the "sold as senn" mumbo jumbo an article sold is still required by law to be fit for the purpose it was intended, have a friendly ask you may get some money back?
And it sounds like a perfect time to put an 1800 DX or PB ( pre 86 early mk2 gti) engine in it, quite a few engines about and virtually identical in every way to the 1600 externaly, you just need to use your inlet mani etc if you go for a PB version

an engine wont cost you heaps, theres a fair few about, its probably worth getting anything you do buy checked over by a decent mechanic prior to fitting it unless you already heard it running and its a goodun, the only other expence is labour, a few service parts and a few gaskets, shouldnt take long to do, might be worth putting a clutch in it too whilst its apart

ok…Just been offered an 1800 early C plate Mk2 gti engine complete with gearbx and mechanical injection ..Still in car so I can hear it running etc from a chappie in my local VW club..125 squid
Now thats seems ok to me..I take it this should go straight in…I have only dealt with motorbike and aircooled engines so far so please excuse the ignorance!!

that will be a PB code engine and WILL FIT straight in your car, i would use your gearbox though, the injection stuff will be no good to you though,
you will need to use all your inlet and exhaust manifolds and more or less everything thats bolted to the outside of your engine, there is also a breather on the back of the head on a PB engine that you dont need, just put a bolt in it or a blank of some sort, everything else is the same. you just need to get some new gaskets for swapping all the bits over

thanks fotr the info…Why use my gearbos thou…Would the one with the 1.8 engine not be better to use as this is the gearbox designed for that engine?
