Whats better twin or single lights?

Whats better guys the original series 1 single headlights, or the series 2 twin head lights? I've got the series 2 GTi Cabrio and took the grille off at the weekend with the full beam lights in it. Afterwards was left with just the single lights and a gap - I can't make my mind up which looks nicer - the single lights or the twins?

What do you all think?

Despite having a Campaign with twin light grill, IMO the single lights look better - kind of plain and simple and how the early ones were.

That said, series 2 Gti's were available with single ight grills also as this was standard - twin lights were an option and only standard on the Campaign model.

I'm thinking of possibly going for the singles, however is the full beam integrated into the single lights or is there not one? I'm confused!!!

On every Mk1 (including cabs I think) the outer headlight includes main beam. The twin grille set ups were either:
- dealer accessory with driving lights (e.g. Hella)
- standard feature with fog lamps (Campaigns and GX)
- standard feature on some later Cabs (e.g. Sportline, Rivage) with driving lamps (I think)

Yes all outer lamps are side/dip/main.

My car has fog lights in the center pair, which I am going to change to Mains so I can see where I am going at night.

Upgrading the outers is a vast improvement by the way.

Its got to be Twin. Fogs are the inner two, However i have found a thread that shows you how to wire the Fogs to become Twin Driving lights (dipped) and Main beam. So you can see the cyclist your about to knock off!!!

When I recently bought my gti cab I found that the inner lights are the full beam lights and there is no change to the outer ones in terms of brightness when I put full beams on - How is this the case?

For me a single light grill look better 95% of the time. Just makes the car look so much easier on the eye and less clutered, tho some cars can pull off twin lights but not very many. I generally have found with my vdubs that less=more. Clean and simple!

The won't necessarily be any brighter (I think there's about 5w difference) but they will be angled differently. The 'dipped beam' is so called becasue the light is angled towards the ground in front of you, but on main beam it points the light more-or-less straight ahead. This is achieved in the outer lights by using a twin filiment bulb (as in loads of other cars) To check if yours is working properly, park really close to a wall or fence etc. and switch from main to dipped beam and back, and watch the beam of the outer light, you should see the difference.

Thanks for that tip Maniac, I will be reconnecting all the lights once I've rewired the car as it's going for a full restoration. I will keep my eyes out for a single light grille in the future and have both. That way I can decide which one looks better!
