what would be the ultimate track car?

When I was sat there bored the other day, I was just thinking about when I win the lottery (:D) what would I buy as I track car, and I can't make my mind up

I love the Integrale

but its 4WD and really I think a track car should be rear wheel drive

Then I was thinking about would it be a classic or modern? I love classics as they have loads more character and are much simpler than modern cars. Ferrari 250 GT SWB would be my obvious choice, it's beautiful, but would I want to be pelting a car thats worth a few million around a track?

Then I was going with the small fry option, a Lotus Elan

fantastic little giant slayer, but maybe too fragile?

I could go with a more modern offering from Lotus, the Exige

but would it be exciting enough?

if not I could go with a more extreme Lotus derived option, the Caterham R500

and if that didn't do it maybe an Ariel Atom

but would I feel safe enough?

maybe something new with a roof, the Audi R8 GT3

but this may be too sterile?

I'll let you know what I go for when my numbers match

The ultimate….would be an F1 car. There are guys who buy previous year's models, run them (normally by paying 2 or 3 mechanics to 'babysit' the car and come along to trackdays, etc) and there is also a race series, I believe, for this kind of thing.

But I imagine you have some kind of budget to worry about.

Pragmatically, Caterham 7 is a really good car, its a road car but it doesn't take too much interpretation to realise its actually an open wheel racer with mudguards and other legal stuff fitted.

Somewhere in between, there is a raft of supercars, Porsche 911 if you want to do the shopping too; Zonda; Konengzburrggttarggookkilssttburrgghszonnzt; Ferraris, Lambos, etc which are nice cars on the road but would really come alive on a track. There's also things like the Ariel Atom which try to do what the Caterham does so well, etc
