What happened?

Is it just me or has the Burmese Cyclone completely disappeared from the news?  I wonder sometimes whether the press, and indirectly us are that fickle that without good media images ? you know the sort I mean, baby pulled from houses, women crying in the street ? we just aren?t interested.

We have all witnessed the frenzy when deaths in double figures happen in the UK , but we are talking about perhaps 10,000 or 20,000 in Burma? Who knows?  China are helping us by allowing the media into the heart of the country, however Burma seems to have been dropped from the news to cover whether the BA executive should be paid a bonus!!!

The world has gone crazy…

im afraid burma will not let any other countrys film in there or help either so im guessing the lack of reports is partly to do with the fact they dont want the rest of the world seeing that they are starving the survivors due to not letting aid through the boarders :banghead:

i know exactly what you mean, unfortunately the media seems to dictate what we think is important, they also seem to think us bits only care about our own countrymen when 9 times out of 10 that just isn't the case!!! Earthquakes and floods may happen in this country every now and then but it happens a damn site worse in other countries!

things like burma just make you realize how lucky we are and what you have in this world! I'm learning quickly to not take anything for granted in this life!!

Yep as said. News is all about ratings and watching someone stood at the border telling you what they've heard is not going to get them.
Its a fickle business. Sad but true.

But its just that i can listen to news without pretty pictures, Its the way the editors of the news channels judge us.  I'm not a sun reader! i don't need big pictures! i can read an article or listen to someone informing me of the disaster .  but they have made there descision, it doesn't make good TV.

I just heard that a school boy has been pulled from the rubble on the news.  That the kind of "good news" stories we are told about. The news is getting more like childrens newsround (if its still going you'll know what i mean)

From another News source
The Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety said that nuclear research reactors or facilities used to produce nuclear fuel were located within 100km of the quake's epicenter.

"Given the strong acceleration observed at 70km from the epicentre ? it is not possible at this stage to exclude damage to these installations," it said on Tuesday.

The institute did not indicate how many such facilities were located in the area.  But the industrial city of Mianyang, where thousands were killed by the quake and more than 18,000 are believed trapped under rubble, is home to the headquarters of China's nuclear weapons design industry.

Rant over,  i will get on with some work now :D  lol

Unfortunately the news does not tell us what is going on in the world. If you ever have the misfortune to know a serious journo type then you'll know that so many stories are passed around and that a lot of the 'rumour' type stories are in most likelihood known to all the journalists and have been passed around but not reported.

There's some stories that are flat out not allowed to be reported on and are quickly shushed. The journalists in major ciculation will all know but cannot write about it.

There's the stories out there, of course, you can't stop it coiming out on the internet. Some interesting things to read are the blog sites that post up the unrepeoted news and point out where stories are biased or spun in a different direction.

Unfortunately journalism isn't the whole facts being told to you, it is full of omissions and bias.

There, cynical rant over.

Yradave says relax.

Don't worry everyone, the crisis is over according to the burmese govt. They have moved into a period of rebuilding…..

What a load of idiots.

They have no rice seed at the moment and need to plant it in the next month or so if they are going to be able to harvest it this year. Some commentators think that the number of people who are going to die of starvation and related diseases later this year and into 2009 with far exceed the number who have already died.

If the Burmese government want to isolate themselves from the international community, even in times of crises, so be it. We (other countries) can't impose ourselves upon them.

I agree but at the same time it does seem a bit crazy.

Effectively the Burmese have to overthrow their military rulers and potentially the 400,000 strong army just so that they can get help from outside.
