What exactly is the definition of concours?

Hi folks,

Just wondering if anyone can settle an argument!  Hubby says concours means the car is never driven and looks like it just came off the line - all bolts lined up and everything polished and perfect (boring).  I say it is a darned near perfect example of a car but someone loves and drives it.

Which of us is right please?!

And no sexist comments guys!!!!!

Cheers

i dont think it matters weather the car is driven or not,its just all about the car :D

if someone can drive a motor and keep it in as new condition then they must be good! 8)

The rules to concours vary from competition to competition and are set by the competition. Some have separate classes for standard factory cars and modified cars, some don't. I am sure all the cars are loved equally standard/modified or driven/not driven. The next question is how you define "modified". In strictest definition this means any change from factory specification, that means any non-VW released factory part for Mk1 Golf (e.g. club stickers, VW carpet mats, parts not containing the VW emblem and part number where normally fitted) For both standard and modified classes, success comes more easily time after time with a low mileage car as ones with higher miles are more likely to need constant repair from suffering wear and tear. In the first instance it is finding or building a car that is the difficult part.

As a basic/general rule I understand concours as 'as it came off the factory line' and that's not relevant to if the car has been restored. If the car is standard/factory spec and restored then this is ok.

I have heard cases before of cars (E-Types and the likes) not winning concours competitions as the paint jobs done during restoration were too good and much better (different?!) to what came off the production line! 8O
