Karmann are a coach builder, much like Ghia or Zegato. They build the Scirocco, Corrado and indeed the soft top Mk1 Golf.

No. Karmann badged cars were built it a completely different factory by Karmann (not Volkswagen). They do all the low volume nice stuff because they are a bit special when it comes to screwing them together.

All Golf Cabriolets were built by Karmann whether they have the badge or not. Same with Corrados.
Brand new, a hard to Golf 1.5 cost less than a soft top convertable Golf 1.5 - for obvious reasons.
