watch out for auto glym products on roofs- DONT USE!!

i used the auto glym product on my cab roof and it stripped the white off leaving a pink colour. sent an email asking why the product had done this to the roof and here is the reply and its upsetting that the cars age goes against it.

Good Morning Stefan,

Thank you for supplying the requested information, my colleague has passed on your enquiry and we have now had time to view these images.

Firstly I would like to highlight that Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Care is a water based, silicone emulsion which has been used successfully in the market place as one of our more popular lines for many  years now. It will provide a transparent coating which will only improve the appearance of clean vinyl and plastic surfaces.

It contains no solvents, or aggressive components which will change the colour of vinyl surfaces.

Autoglym log and record all correspondence regarding our range and any complaints are investigated appropriately.  In this case, taking into account the age of the roof, our knowledge of the product and its capability, we are confident that Autoglym Vinyl & Rubber Care has not been responsible for the appearance of your roof.  As you are aware, the Mk1 Golf ceased manufacture many years ago, and being the original roof, the appearance shows it to have suffered a degree of deterioration from ageing.

Considering the age and appearance of your hood, we would advise you to seek specialist renovation expertise and regret that we do not carry this type of product within our range.

agghh mate feel for you, did you do a test patch somewhere first.

i used the auto gleam roof cleaner and protector on my black vinyl roof and it did quite a good job, all i can think is maybe the white vinyl is dyed? which maybe caused your problems?

you maybe able to re dye it to bring it back to white?

best of luck with it, but thats for posting it up so people with white roofs are aware

Hi sorry to hear about your hood! I use the auto glum vinyl and rubber care without any problems on all my cars the only minor thing I find is tha if you leave it on two long it seems to leave a little stain but that's it. Why don't you post up some pics so we can see what's happened ?

ok to show pictures can someone please give me a quick clue on how to do it as only just started in the forum game. also not being completely stupid and after doing a test area first and following the instructions. we do air brush work onto anything that moves and i have a show winning  camper so im  not up for taking risks with cleaning materials. although i dont want to believe it myself the colour came off directly after spraying the top and buffing it. look forward to the photo instructions
i have had the car for over 5 years its the original roof and only comes out for 6 months of the year and is stored in a lock up with sheets all over it and left apart from starting every other week.

Is there an area left untouched on the hood?

I would then invite Autoglym to bring some stuff and test it out on the roof to confirm wether it's there product or not.

It could be a reaction with another product sll ready on the top?

I will do some question asking for you tomorow.

Is it the origional top? How old is it? What has been used on it before?

I had a white top that ended up with pink on it, but cannot remember what I used that caused the issue.

hello chortle
Is there an area left untouched on the hood?
yes the sides of the roof, i did a test spot on the sides then went onto the top which is spoilt now.

I would then invite Autoglym to bring some stuff and test it out on the roof to confirm wether it's there product or not.
i gave them the opportunity to put it right but received the email i posted

It could be a reaction with another product sll ready on the top?
i only use a wash and wax on the car "turtle" was the last one. always ran a chamois over the car afterwards, but possible.

Just something that might help where it has gone pink/discoloured, I use this on my hood, outside and on the liner. It's a dense foam that you just use with water and scrub! Doesn't use any detergent, so you won't get any reaction with whatever is already on there. I get mine from Wilko's, lot's of different makes, but all do the same job. I use a lot of the vinyl and rubber cleaner, but this works better. Anna

I remember that when I used same AutoGlym product and it left a greasy residue on the hood. When it rained it washed off slightly and the windows got smeared with it. I may have used too much product but I've never used it again.

Have a look at this thread with photos. It shows the cleaning process that I did a few years ago.
It works, its cheap and it doesn't damage the hood.

Are you sure the hood hasn't been painted before to freshen up the car? Perhaps the Autoglym has taken the paint coating off revealing the old surface.  :dontknow:

Accordingly they are staing it's a water based Sillicone emulsion.

To melt the plastic or destabilise it would need a high concentrate solvent. Which is not an ingredient.

I looked on the website today, but cannot see a list of ingredients. So if anyone can list them that would be good.

My suspicion is that because the hood is old there will be various spots, high and low that will have been rubbed over the years thining them out, as well as uv degredation. We know that the material can become porous overtime too.

It could well be the cotton backing under the vynil, has somehow become affected by the product, causing a bleaching action, so the pink shows through.

I would like to get hold of an old white roof to do some tests on it.
Is the backing cotton grey in colour on the white roofs?
Another hypothesis is that there has been a mix up at the manufacturing plant, ie swapping production lines and the product has been contaminated, with something more aggressive, so even if it had a white paint on it, that would need to be water based soluble.

Still working on it.

thanks to you all for your answers!
the white has come off leaving the pink colour, its not gone pink. its like the original roof was a pink colour and the white was put onto it?
auto glymm have now passed my details etc onto their legal department as i have asked who i speak to about going to the small claims court.
