vw sign, do'nt see it these days

Does any one know anything about the emblem in the middle of  steering wheels on older  VWs.
It's some long necked animal on a striped back ground ,not exactly a racing or fierce breed that would be fitting such a car.
  speek soon Ali

'tis a Wolf infront of a Castle 'coz Volkswagens' factory is in "Wolfsburg" - or "Wolfs' Castle" - well that's what it is supposed to be anyway.

The city of Wolfsburg was developed to house VW's factory workers. The name "Wolfsburg" itself came after World War 2 and was taken from the Wolfsburg Castle that was founded around 1300 on the banks of the river Aller. This castle has now been replaced by another built after 1600.
