I'd also be interested in the VW parts required for a stock front and rear setup, plus costs.
Might have a delve into ETKA to see what I can come up with. This is one job I want to do soon as the Billies on my car are too hard for my liking!

The part no is 171412031J and they sell for ?31 & vat but this is the complete strut not just the insert. VW only do the one shock which fits all models

So the GTi shocks are the same spec as the normal shocks then? It was just the springs that were stiffer / lower?

They used to list standard and heavy duty shocks but the standard ones were superceded to the heavy duty ones which now fit them all inc jetta's and caddy's. And don't forget Scirocco's but the 16v i see has different ones  i wonder if they would improve the frt of the Golf??????
Yes it was just the springs that are different

I bought a set of standard springs and shock from VW and I had the same result as littlekev about 2 years ago.
There were two sets of shocks, but now there is only one set, the uprated variety.
The springs are different, though.
Cheers,
Drew.

So Drew, when you say standard springs, you mean the shorter GTi ones or just normal Mk1 springs?

Standard 'GTI' springs. These are (a bit) stiffer and shorter than the rest of the mk1 range. But I think shared with the caddy as I recall. (At the front atleast)….my memory is a bit hazy now!
