I ought to be feeling sorry for the guy, but I can't help thinking they got what they deserved. Some things just don't look quite right:

1. The rear engine was severely wobbling at full revs. This probably started the accident sequence by 'shaking loose' a fuel pipe or something.
2. No firewall between the front seats and the engine. Can you name a production car without a firewall?

The fire started at low revs, on overrun. It sounds like the rear engine backfired and split the inlet system in a place that it shouldn't have been split in. If it was a nitrous fed fire, why was nitrous being fed on the overrun? And why didn't the burst plate burst (did it have one???)

I'm with paul it looks a bit DIY gone wrong, at least he is around to buy another

Rather extreme rear window demister . The amount of engine movement at full revs looked a bit dodgy 8O

Engine mounts dodgy but sounded sweet right up until it went pop . Happiness is a hot vw , but not quite that hot . Lucky it dident take the garage with it .

I bet they took loads of orders for work that day (!)  Slightly embarrasing to have the car you're showing off as an example of your engineering skills explode, eh ?

Could have been worse……… he could have been full chatter down a straight…. which kind of makes it a little harder to jump out! Lucky escape I say….. you can always fix a car.

I bet it went like stink though. 8) Interesting to see how he does it next time.
