Towing/Driving Rules

Going to look at a car tomorrow around 2 miles from my flat. What are the rules on towing cars these days. They seem to have changed.. I don't believe the car has an M.O.T.

If the car is drivable, is driving it 2 miles too much of a risk?

From experience, how much does a "man-with-trailer" cost to hire for all of 10 minutes?

Its pretty simple, if it doesn't have MoT: you can't drive it, or have it towed with any of its wheels on the road, legally.

The only exemption for no MoT is if you're going to or from a pre-booked MoT.

10 minutes with the car on it…..how far away does the man-with-trailer have to travel to get there and back though? Best idea would be to pop into your local garage and ask if they have a regular guy they use for transportation of cars, so you find someone local. I've moved cars before but only in the locality, doesn't make sense to travel out of the area etc.

book it in for an MOT, drive it there have it checked then drive it home, doesn't matter if it fails really as you have got you car home for £30 - £40 quid :D

I live in glasgow and there seem to be some Car delivery services within proximity of the city centre, close to both my flat and obviously the 2.8 mile, 6 minute drive to my flat. See what the prices are like.

It must be noted that i will be driving over the busiest bridge in the west of Scotland.

Where i live there are several M.O.T Garages and they do them for £20! so i might try that.

x2, this is perfectly legal from the MoT point of view. However, you'd need car insurance to do it (even if you have "driving other cars" on your policy - it won't cover the car because its now yours, it only covers cars not owned by you). And also, obviously, the car needs to be roadworthy. You don't know the car, so you don't know this, so have a close look at it.

If the car's in good condition and there's obviously no defects which would make it unroadworthy, then maybe the "drive to MoT then drive home" will be okay - but remember insurance.

Bert runs a garage, he probably has trade insurance, so doesn't need to worry about it!

Cost me £40 to have my car collected on a flat bed and dropped off 3 miles down the road. Good thing is if they damage it it's fully insured
