I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines

I had the camber set to 0 degrees using that camber bolt, and the handling was awful, really washy under cornering load. However, after setting the camber to FULL (roughly 2.5-3 degrees) the car handles really well considering it doesn't have ARBs or low profile tyres.
Although your tyres do suffer as a consequence
:dontknow: its all preference of course but if it were my car, put a fair amount of camber on

if anything it's allowing me to go into a corner so hard i'm going to have to fit a duckbill to reduce the understeer a little!!!!
it's not just the tyre that suffers, straight line stability suffers as well, and on a windy day too much camber can make for an interesting ride on our shocking roads lol
X, I would say that you maybe have a problem elsewhere, possibly castor related, as negative castor means you need to run more camber.
theres a bit in the running gear section about suspension set-ups. It's worth reading. Or tbf you could play forza 3, as it does a pretty good job explaining it in there lol
