Thinking about it again

Hi everyone :D

Im thinking of buying Mk1 cabby again :D

I had one about 10 years ago and it was my pride and joy :D I only sold her because i had to move and couldnt find anywhere to park her up

I was looking to buy another one about 6 months ago, but the ones i went to look at, were tatty to say the least :( I was looking at the bottem price bracket back then thou  I only wanted to pay around ?1000 because it was going to be my second car

Now things have changed, My pulsar gtir was stolen 4 weeks ago
Im still in two minds to be honest
I do love the nissan pulsar gtir :D

but i cant get the Mk1 cabby out of my mind

Im thinking of spending  upto ?3000+ on a good Mk1 cabriolet gti karmann or sportline :D

What sort of condition and milage should i be looking at for this sort of money?

Do any of the Mk1 cabs come with power steering?

And How easy is it to uprate the brakes? as my last one wasnt to clever

Also can you get diferent dashboards?? when i had mine, i saw someone had put a mk3 (i think) dash into thier Mk1.

I know most of you will hate me for wanting to change the retro parts of the Mk1!! but i think its upto me what i want mine to have and look like!!!

I will be uprating the suspesion, running gear and all the handling on mine if i decide to have one again.

The body will stay standard!! as i love the look of the Mk1 big bumper cabby as it is. It will be lowerd thou

All coments are most welcome!!! Good or bad!!!!

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Stu.

Go on Stu, you know you want to come back!!

?3k should get you a very tidy cabby - there's been a few Sportlines about for this sort of ball park, I think on here and ebay, worth a look. Check out our cabby buyers guide on the homepage, full of colour pics and tips - you gotta have a look!

I know most will not agree with MK3 dash - no idea how hard to swap - but at end of day its up to you like you say, will be your car! 8)  Main thing is being able to put back to standard to ease re-sale if you don't keep forever.

Keep us posted on your search

Cheers
Andy

Thanks for the reply Andy :D

I have already read through the buying guide thanks. I know a fair bit about the problems to expect or to look out for because i owned my last one for 4 years :D

I have mailed a guy on here already about a sportline that he is selling :D I couldnt believe how little he wanted for it 8O They were fetching around ?4k last year im sure?? Maybe they still do when they are conquorse?? this one hasnt got the sportline wheels on, and maybe its lost a few other things aswell. Looks the part none the less!!!

If i change anything, i will store it away incase i dont keep it for life, like you say.

Im definatly thinking about buying another one!!! I just need to get to a few shows maybe and have a look whats around :D

I have been looking at prices for parts and they are dirt cheap 8O  When i had mine, it cost me ?500 for a moe hair hood, i have seen them going for ?180 8O  I thought mine was cheap at the time, VW wanted ?1000 just for the skin 10 years ago

Even the door waist strips have come down in price 8O  I thought everything would of gone up in price!! I payed ?45 for each strip when i had mine replaced, i have seen they are about ?12 each now??? this cant be true?? surely!!!

The more i look the more i want

I will keep you updated

Do you know if you can get a power steering model?? i know mine didnt have it. it was on a F reg 1989. F379 RBC Golf Mk1 1.8 gti Karmann

I loved that car!!! it was black with bbs cross spoke alloys, black and white leather interior with a janspeed twin dtm exhaust, moe hair hood and leather tonou cover. Everyone use to look at me in that :P When i sold her  she had 69k on the clock fvwsh and i was the third owner.

The first owner was a lady that had owned it for 12 years 8O  the second owner had only had it for 2 years and rarely used it, also a lady owner.

I would love to see it now!!

8) you cant go wrong with a nice cabriolet, you mention the Sportline but have you considered the Rivage model? bit harder to find as they dont often get sold on, especially the leather interior version 8)  few cloth ones around though, unfortunately as the weather gets better they all go up for sale! then everyone wants one and the sellers in a great position! winter buys are best, still some bargains to be had. this is mine

and this is a VW press photo

Rivage came in Blue or Green body colour, with cloth trim with power hood, heated front seats, forged polished "Le castalet" alloys, there was also a "Rivage leather" option which obviously came with a leather interior! in cream/beige and the sportline model, which had grey/red cloth Recaro bucket seats 8)  power hood and the black/silver BBS RA alloys, both cars are really nice models, Rivage looks like a totally sensible car and classy, sportline is the same imo but just looks that bit more "sporty"  both cost around 17k when new depending on year, some very nice ones about, saw a mint blue Rivage for sale near me a few months ago for 5k!!! it was mint mint though with only 46k on the clock! but you cna pick them up cheaper than that, that was a one off car, most are around 2-4k
