The smell of fear....

Anyone had any scarry moments on the ice in past few days?

Thought my daily driver was going to get it on the way home tonight, going down a hill (not that steep) with a kink to the left about half way down, touched the brakes to slow down a little before the bend and the back end started sliding away, managed to keep the car straight but no brakes just slid all the way down how I missed the parked cars I don't know.

Don't know what it's like in the rest of the country but it's so cold here the snow and ice just isn't shifting, think I might stay home for the rest of the week.

Nightmare, however good a driver you are conditions like
this are not to be taken lightly. We have a courtesy car
at the moment (Mrs dibbler crashed her car) and they
said look after the courtesy car as its only done 2000 miles
but getting it back in 1 bit is going to be hard   considering
the conditions at the moment.

its the same here mate, some of the snow started to thaw yesterday but the water froze really hard last night (coldest night here so far) and i feel the same is going to happen tonight. Although it started to thaw there is still a huge amount of snow laying around

It's a nightmare round nottingham, the main roads are all fine now just because the amount of traffic has melted the ice/snow but when u get into the smaller side streets and stuff its just sheet ice!

there was an 'S' bend in the road in front of me, doing about 15 mph and just slide straight on and bent the front bumper on one of those wierd black plasticy *but solid* posts as the curbed dipped down for a crossing :(

Was considering the bumperless look in the new year, made me think how glad i was that they were still on as the front bumper took the shock and hasnt damaged anything else. quite lucky it was evening and there was no one about really, but you have got to be careful guys!

I second the last note from Sedge, be careful out there.

One thing that is really getting my back up though is these 4x4 drivers who think that they are immune from losing control on ice, seen several today driving up people's backsides!!

Starting to sound like my dad……

they think that there 4 wheels will never lose control but we all know they will.

I've been having some fun.

Everything I drive is rear engined so a few tail out moments.

Snow's coming down quite well now so tomorrow morning when I'm off to work in the van at 7 it should be fun.

Oh, and squirting the tail of a double decker bus on compacted icy snow is most amusing.

Yradave says relax.

It's not much fun in an '05 rear wheel drive lpg/petrol Transit. Last night, pitch black, icy roads and freezing fog on winding country roads…nice. Useless bloody things. Can't stop spinning the back wheels no matter what you try and do, unless you put half a tonne of weight right at the back. Can't wait to get back in the Mk1 after that…piece of pee.
I've found a lot of the time that the people who have 4x4's are the most useless drivers ever…the one time of the year their vehicle might be at its most useful.

graydog lost the front end of his caddy to the ice   …. cracking car too!!

I've been using gears to slow down and round corners… weird sensation as you automatically want to brake…. it's kept me out of trouble so far though  :dontknow:

Same as above, engine breaking and trying very hard to be gentle when changing gear!

Had a few near misses this weekend, funniest was coming into the carpark of the m6 southbound travelodge on sunday night, came in a little too fast (about 10mph lol) and turned the wheel only to keep going gently into the hedge lol my mate then, in his own words thought "ah, hahaha oh god now I have to stop too…" and slid in next to me lol.

it also took me 45 mins to do 16 miles on saturday morning, couldn't get out of third else the wheels just span up!!!

good job i brought a shovel on the trip.

everytime i park at my girlfriends house i have to dig the car out to get any grip lol

in lincolnshire the main roads aren't too bad but the back roads around the villages are like glass.

lol - me and mk1jim got caught out returning from a pub lunch after the derbyshire meet on sunday - a few hairy moments trying to get up very very steep hills, but on the whole have to say my mk1 is brilliant in the snow.  Has a heck of a lot more grip than modern cars seem to.  Still driving like I have eggs on the pedals though - got no bumpers and dont want to make a mess!!

we only had it really bad for one day here (being by the coast helps) but cant believe some peoples stupidity. i took the quatrro to work as i knew it would be bad, this turned out to be a mistake as got nowhere any easier as always got stuck behind some numpty in a small french hatchback trying and failing to get up a hill they just watched 30 other small french hatchbacks failing to get up, no trouble for me though, having 4 wheel drive is great you have loads of grip so dont get stuck but always have to remember that even with 4 wheel drive you still cant stop, never had the abs kicking in so much. couple of heart stopping moments though, all caused by other people not driving to the conditions, had three cars come sliding straight out of side junctions as travelling to fast. i was going 15 mph on the main roads and had a corsa (woman driving two kids in the car!) right up my bumper trying to overtake down a hill!!!!!!!. i was in first gear engine braking so no brake lights, as i approached a corner brushed the pedal, looked in the mirror and watched her slam on and preform a nice slow 360 degree spin behind me ending up on the pavement how she missed me i will never know

I love seeing people in £30,000 Beemers fail to get up the slightest incline because of rear wheel drive that just spins.
Then I tootle past in a 28 year old Mk1 diesel that cost less than one of his alloys.
