Its not tax exempt, the tax you pay will be based on the capacity of the engine. Its a series 2 Mk1. DK must mean its a convertible, the D is a year code (1983 MY) and the K is for Karmann, and they assembled the convertibles. W is for Wolfsburg, where the regular hatchbacks were made.

You're lucky! I've just looked it up, you have a 1.5 which means you pay the lower band. In 1984 they went to 1.6, which slots into the higher one.

my baby is only a standard 1.5 gl ….. at the moment

plan is to drop a 1.8 gti engine in but apparently as mine is an old skool carb this may present my mechanic Mr G. with a few probs wiring looms or whatever … all double dutch to me but im learning or at least im trying to .

then he wants to put gas flows and twin 40's im not entirly sure what these are but i know it will make my car well chuffin fast and sound sweet and eat my back account up in petrol and tax !!!

1.8 engine with carbs but tuned, sounds like a better plan than trying to go to the injection motor, because it will save the complications of fitting a GTI fuel tank, pump, fuel lines, etc

Gas flow is a technique to make the inlet manifold more efficient. 40s is a size of carburettor. If you also did exhaust enhancements and a cam change, then 100-120 bhp should be achievable.

so in the long run u say i should stick wi a carb engine ?
it would make sense , ok would it be sacralige to drop a different make engine into my golf like say a 2litre cavalier carb , i dont know much but i know that it will fit !!

ok so the plot thickens and the hunt continues

i wish id paid more attention when  my x was waffling bout cars arghhhhh

It used to be moving on each year, but our current Chancellor come wannabe prime minister put a stop to that back in the late nineties…

Not sure when, if ever, most Golf mk1s will be tax exempt.

Cheers,

Drew.

I think it was a 25 year rule that was introduced and any owner still paying road tax on their car manufactured pre-1973 could claim a refund. The refunds were given from Jan 1st 1998 onwards if you could prove your car was manufactured before Jan 1st 1973.

That was it 25 not 30! couldn't remember - 25 makes more sense…..98' means labour, means loss of perks…..thought 30 didn't sound right….too early yet!

to qualify for free road tax the car has to have been manufactured before 1st jan 1973, it could have been registered later but has to have been built by that date, so no golf will ever be tax free (unless they change the rules/law).  if your car is 25years+ you can get historic insurance which is loads cheaper but with most insurance companies you have to run an every day car to get the silly low qoutes you hear about (?75-150 per year fully comp).
