SPORTLINE OWNERS PLS HELP! Whats on your Logbook????

My car was involved in a accident and there given me a market value price, but according to the logbook/dvla system its a 'GOLF CLIPPER' cabriolet. Just wanted to know what other 'Mk1 Sportline' owners have on there logbooks?

Does it actually say 'Sportline' on it…i was doubtfull it would because its just a cosmetic addition to the std spec car, but the insurance people are valueing it as per logbook description, ie getting the market vale of just a normal 'Clipper'.

My cars a 1993 model, now got 99k on the clock, all mots to prove mileage/ part service history, has everything the sportline should have (full electrics/recarro trim/orange dial needles…the only things not on there were the side stickers (but last owner said he removed em) and the bbs rims (i sold onto a mate…but had them. Plan is to get BBS Splitz in same colours).

I need to get back to the insurance company ASAP to dispute, but want to know what logbook should say.

Both DVLA and VW cant help….Just hope some of you are still browsing the mk1 forums from work.

Funk-Star had one that didn't specify Sportline but on checking with the dealer it certainly was. Looks like the DVLA decided on a whim what to actually put on the V5, doesn't change what it is though.

Phone vw in milton keynes, give them either your reg or chassis number and they will tell you what the car is, thats what i did.

If your V5 says clipper on it then its not a sportline as a clipper was not even injected, it was a carb engine. or your car has some sketchy history.

Phone VW and let us know the outcome.

There number is 0800 333 666

I was given a guy?s name in my local vdub (Colindale) to contact who?s one of their parts experts and he said coz it?s just trim, it wouldn?t be specified…. also tried the chaps in Milton Keynes VW, they said its def a GTI (Phew!) and can only blame it on administration errors to why its stated as ?Clipper? on the logbook.

They also can?t confirm if it?s a ?Sportline? either…was kinda left on the lines of ?if its got all the trimz ?then it probably is?, just not something they keep on record. Was told I can try VW Germany and they might have more info, but not guaranteed.

The chassis number and plate match (Double Phew!!) and all my mots have right chassis/plate ref although I didn?t mention before their was a private plate on the car at one point in-between (could have the point it got screwed but i?ll never know).

It looks like some of you have been lucky to have it stipulated on your pinks. Guess whoever was processing mine at the DVLA was doing a Friday afternoon jobby of it.

I?ve disputed the car value with insurance and hopefully they will change their opinion on the market value.

Just to let you know…I?m not tryna get a ?write off? value from them or anything, but they priced it ?2100 (93 GTI Sportlines with 99k on the clocks is worth far more) which means i get less levy on the repairs side.

I refused a Cat D as it can be fixed, but due to parts shortage (rear panels obsolete + all the other lil bits and bobs) the insurance repairs garage can?t take car in. Have been tryna source parts myself but hitting a wall….so going for the repairs cash instead now, but unless they increase the car value, won?t get enough out of them to fix her.

Thanks for help, well appreciated!

Hope someone can fill the gaps….i did wonder why it was JH a while back, but it seems that was the varient that came with the Cataylic.

Think it was also down a couple of BHP from the DX performancewise, but i got a full stainless system done, binned the CAT (Checked and as car was March 93, wasnt mandatory for MOT), swapped the throttle body for the Audi 2ltr, took the fuel cut limiter thingy off and opted for the Pipercross KJET airbox which brought its grunt back. Still doesnt seem as fast as my tintop, but that weighed allot less although this is allot smoother so cant really complain.

Its not really for speed anyway, just always wanted one and getting one in black on a K plate was just the icing on top. Brakes upfront have been upgraded to TSR Big Brake setup (Caliper adaptor for 280mm BlackDiamond disks and Mintex Extreme pads).Bought some G60Steels from vdub for a more retro look and although i said i wouldnt after the cack ride on my tintop, when my coilovers from 'hot tuning' got replaced under warranty for a new set (TA Techs opposed the original Raceland one that went faulty) i put em on my cabrio.

At 98k, i had a build up in water pressure occuring (diagnosed by Middx Tuning) - wasnt loosing water nor was the oil/water mixxing, but my fan was having to kick in far to often so whacked head off and the water vents around head were clogged. Although didnt plan it, turned into opportunity for a topend rebuild, timing belt & waterpump change. The bottom end was pucka so left it well alone. Head sent off for acid wash/pressuretest and skim then used all original parts for internals and even used VW coolant (Cheap coolant was most likey cause for the problem).

As with all mk1s, allot of time is spent on it sorting little probs here and there, but thats probably part of their charm….i was gutted when it was shunted, but its all good….just gota get the insurance to pay up and i'll spunk the money in getting it back to norm. I'm not fussed if it doesnt proove to be a real 'Sportline', but its worth more then ?2100 all day long. Hoping those codes proove it eiitherway doh.

What are you actually trying to get from the insurance if not write off value. If the parts are all obsolete then there are a few options. Cat D the vehicle and keep it once paid out. Or try and get them to pay you cash in luei for the repairs and you go get it repaired at your leisure (is that what you ment).

As for weather its a sportline does seem a little iffy. You could see a sportline maybe being registered as just a gti, but as a clipper which only came with a carb engine is slightly confusing.

VW UK should be able to tell you how that car left the factory.

Send a PM to Timski off this forum as I think he has a repair shop down near surrey that repairs alot of mk1`s

Cheers

Hi, i'm after a better market value then what was offered so i can get a more worthwhile sum in cash payout for repairs (cash in luie).

Rightly i cant get it sorted under insurance repair due the difficulty in sourcing genuine parts. But, if they dont increase the market value of the car…i get less cash to get the repairs done (i was rear ended at standstill so not sure why i should loose out here)

VW UK confirmed its a GTI (The JH is a K JET GTI block produced until 93) (As far as i'm aware the carb blocks were EW, RE, EWA, EX). They just cant confirm if its a Sportline. Also cant explain why it just says Clipper on the logbook…say its an error or DVLAs part and i can get ammended by writing a request letter to do so…but yeah dont tally up right somewhere.

I'm gonna give them another call 2mrw and see if i can get anything more outa them.

Funkstar - the bootlid can be repaired, but thanks for the offer m8
