South African Mk1 Import GTI's

Hi guys, new to the forum so be gentle!

Im in the process of purchasing a 2001 Y reg mk1 golf 1.6 gti that was imported from South Africa as a new car and first registered here in 2001. Now its only done in the region of 28,000 miles and had 4 previous owners, with a full bbs kit, deep dish alloys and is in great shape…im just a little wary with a few things so im hoping someone with some previous knowledge could shed some light on the situation…

..What is the resale value of these babies like? Its on for ?3,995 but ive got him down a bit already, does this seem a little keen or am i getting a bargain?
For example what would a realistic asking price be if it was placed in a specialist golf magazine to appeal to enthusiasts (this one is just at a normal garage)?

Any info at all is appreciated, please let me know before i take the big step!

hi mate, its not a gti its either 85 bhp or 100 bhp mk3 engine (different cams). the citis dont fetch as much as the uk mk1's but u wanna be getting him down a lot further than that! (?2000 ish) is this car a grey colour? if its the same citi that was on ebay a few months back its worth a few quid like but ?3995 is taking the michael, if miles are right and everything works out should be a good buy tho if a tad cheaper  seems to be a few more citis popping up lately so dont go mad! you are right about the uk bits as well, they all fit  8O

there is a 1300 on ebay at the moment, doesn't look like it will make much though. citi golf here, I like the idea of a newer mk1 but there are draw backs (imho) - only available in 5dr, funny look mold on the rear quarters, strange front valence.
Would possibly look good in a BBS kit thou'

It is a grey import yes and i cant help but think that im thinking with my heart and not with my head at times on this one, but it has only done 28,000 and is in top nick…

Before you go any further Sort out INSURANCE. A few work colleagues have tried to insure Grey imports and found it hard & pricy, one bought the car beforehand and was stuck with it for 8 months on his drive with out insurance. Hope this helps :dontknow:

2001 Y reg mk1 golf 1.6

What else can you get for ?3750 ? Thats 5 years old ?  And is different ?

 :dontknow:

Buy with a view to keeping it , resale maybe a problem at a high price later on so i would offer less cash . Then enjoy driving something different .

Cheers………

You could get a limited edition late cabriolet for ?3750, either a Sportline, Rivage or even a clipper if you wanted a cheaper insurance car! You could get all of these on a classic car policy too! Might be worth a look as they will hold their value now, maybe even go up slightly! One thing is for sure, you will never struggle to sell it again!  :D

seriously mate it aint worth 4 grand, seen it before, he reckons he has had cat fitted for import test :? which in theory he could have like… yeah, yeah:), tell him u got 2 grand spare. them 1.6 8v engines are reliable but u got dearer tax and not as nippy as older ones.  when u got one then u gotta start thinking about suspension (heavy duty, factory fitted, sealed job) dont come off easy will need cutting gear to get back dampers off and front inserts are welded into legs.  honest mate be a good car for 2 grand. tough old things tho with good brakes and no rot, same bits as mk1 big block. HIC, admiral, adrian flux, churchill insure em' might be some others as well.  one of the members on here called bert knows a fair old bit about them if you get stuck collar him,
cheers,

Bristol Mate,

I can give you a bit of History for this car.

This Car was advertised on the VWM online site last year by a girl asking ?2695 or something. It was her ex boyfriend?s car. She had it advertised for about 4 months or something.

Then this chap who currently owns it bought it off her for ?2200 and since then has been trying to sell it off for ?3995 on the Auto trader website… At on time he had advertised the car for ?2995.

It looks like a good Car but I don?t think its worth a lot especially you will find it had to sell it back again if you do sell it.

I know about it as just like you I was interested in this car but then backed off (which I did tell the girl) as the south African Imports don?t hold their Re-sell value.

If you do buy it don?t pay a lot for it mate, you can get a lot for ?4000 out there

Don?t mean to put you off but just trying to help as ?4k is a lot.

Hope that helped.

Cheers 8)
