some general advice needed

I'm looking into getting a mk1 and wondered what would be the better choice, getting say a 1.8 gti for around 2500 or trying to find a really nice 1.1-1.3 for say 3500. what sort of mpg would I be looking at for both cars and rough petrol prices thanks guys

Them 2 cars are the opposite end of the range and are like chalk and cheese. Why not spend £3500 and get a really nice GTI? Or 2500 on the 1.1?

mpg - depends how you drive, not much difference in the entire range (except diesels) because the bigger the engine, generally the higher the gearing and of course, you can drive it more gently so it closes the gap on economy. For a properly set up car, driven sensibly, 35-40mpg.

thanks mate and and the pricing was really to combat insurance on some levels I guess and I meant the cost to fully fill the tanks haha but it's seeming hard to find a really nice low engined mk1 so maybe the gti, might look into campaigns, thanks a lot
