Whoa slow down! Road pricing has MANY benefits to Mk1 Golf owners! For example, I have 3 cars, at the moment they're all ?175/year to tax. And I can't go through the hassle of cancelling for a month here & there. If road pricing existed, then many owners who run second cars, would be better off!
i would agree with you .we have more than average golf family and it would save us on taxeing cars that we dont use (fines on sorns .which i have just got on two cars}

I would walk to work if it was going to cost me more than it would do on fuel curently.. ( not that driving a 2.9L 24V scorpio is cheap on fuel anyway… )
But I can't see them scrapping RLF and Fuel Taxes..

This is flawed because…
I) Roads like the M25 are congested from early to late evening, so there is no quiet time to travel in.
II) Motorists will think they are the only brainiacs to start using cheaper backroads - except everyone will be trying that.
III) It has been suggested that motorists travel at different times to spread congestion. How is this going to happen with those travelling to work, unless all employers are forced allow all staff to work flexible hours - unlikley
III) People often have to finish work at say 4-5 pm beacuse they have children to go home and look after/feed (or perhaps they will nightschooling - sort out the overcrowded classrooms!
I don't think multiple car owners are going to see any benefit - prices so far prices as high as ?1.50 have been mentioned 8O although this probably government spin so that when they suggest ?1 a mile we all think… ohhh thats better  .
I also find unacceptable that the government will be tracking our movements, what with potential of ID cards everything is being put in place for a fascist state  in place.
Everyone please seriously question road taxing per mile. It seems to many people have looked at it and thought I'll be better of so it's ok, it's highly unlikely you will better off and it isn't ok.
Just a few thoughts there

I am not going to live in a country where (1) the government tracks my every movement (2) taxation on movement is imposed and (3) the government has an "open door" mandate to progressively increase a highly regressive tax.

This will not stop people driving. The government no doubt suggests it will encourage people to use public transport, however they well know that most people would sooner drive, or have no choice but to drive.
To quote Clarkson, just the other day "The only way that people will use public transport is to make it as comfortable and convienient as the car"
So they take advantage of this by taxing us even more than we already are!!! So they have failed to provide us with decent roads, and then as an additional blow they are charging us to use the shoddy ones they have provided!
Tax happy government that really hates the motorist.
I feel sorry for VW's in this country, they expected to be used on the fantastic german roads but are put through the torment of uk ones, and norfolk roads even, don't get me started.

But since they've said that it would be revenue-neutral, and that they've not released details, you can't really say what will happen yet….

the old system was easy up to 1400cc and above
but now the changed it to emmisions
it changed in march 01 my astra was registered in dec 2000 and it runs on lpg
if i brought the same car on a y plate onwards it would be cheap as chips to tax but as its in the old system it cost me as a 1.4 and above. so a car with a dirty great big v8 pumping out deadly enviromently un friendly gases gets taxed the same as a 1.6 lpg which mainly give off harmeless h20 is its emmisions
it really winds me up

I am absolutely disgusted at the failing and inability of this government to consider the feelings and opinions of the people of this country! I cannot believe that we live in a country where we give money to people who have no intention of working, houses to imigrants, a slap on the wrist to criminals over 16 and naff all to those under 16 apart from a holiday with a load of other young offenders!

I WISH EVERYONE IN THE WORLD COULD HAVE READ THAT STATEMENT.

Its so true.
I HATE this country now but don't want to move cus of the fuss & used to this place.

The NATIONAL Health Service is a system in place for all the citizens of this country who pay into a huge pot if you like, almost like an insurance policy! Not WORLDWIDE free healthcare service paid for by the workers of the UK….Now I don't actually begrudge healthcare to anyone, no, what I actually believe is that to help improve the health service, the expence of drugs and equipment should be addressed. Then I think the reallity of not being able to help everybody in the world should be realised, as places like Australia, Canada, USA all seem to have done without any problems!
Prison….Surely someone who burgles your house should be chained up to another few blokes and dressed in an orange suit, breaking rocks and fixing roads! Then sleep in a tiny cell with bars on the windows and eat a small bowl of gruel! Not a comfortable life inside, with table tennis and pool tables, good food and a luxury gym to help them become super criminal hard men for when they come out! Who pays for all this? Correct, we do….So why is our money not used more constructively for those who deserve it? How many good charities would you give that money too if you had the choice of giving it to them or a buch of rapist, murdering thiefs, who would think nothing of killing you to evade capture having broken into your home!….We all know the answer to these problems and they all have a knock on effect on each other! It needs dealing with! NOW! :x
