should I sell or not

Ok set the scene:- Well Christmas is over, Not strated the MK1 for about month and just got it insured nice crisp day no rain. been feeling under the weather with a head cold so went out for a drive in the Mk1 after getting it started. Forgot what joy it is to drive much better than the focus.

Stopped at a petrol stration and got talking to an old boy (50ish) who went on about the one he used to own which was black then out of the blue he asked if I would be intrested in selling the MK1 saying he would pay ?2500 as it look a good example. He left me his number to think about it.

?2500 is a whole heap of money!  Take the cash and buy another one - pocket the change or use it to make the new one nice.  I've got a black Campaign coming up in a bit, not sure how much I want for it yet like.

My mate just sold his Mk1 for pretty much the same money - ?2500 will buy some very quick metal indeed!

tough one - do you need the money? I know whatever my financial position I would not sell it - I love and cherish my mk1 - wouldn't give it up for the world!

Let me put it this way, 2500 is not a great deal for a very good Campaign.  I have 2 - one near mint, and the other in very good condition.  I paid 3500 for my near mint one, and feel i've done well with the other one for 1200 (i've had to spend 300-400 on in though).

Look on ebay at the mo, there is a silver one with 180,000 miles going for 1750.  What condition is yours?

Don't need the money it just when you get offered you start to think what else you could do with the money, it's a little more than I paid for the mk1 last year.

The silver one on E bay is more less the same but mine has 111.000 miles and not lowered.

If its a good one and you love it - dont do it IMO. I spent quite a bit more than that buying a pretty mint car - just wouldnt sell it for any other car.

Ok put it this way….. What other car could you buy for ?2.5k that would put a smile on your face so effectively? :dontknow:

In my opinion the value of mk1's will soar in the not too distant future. If you sell her you'll most definitely regret it.

And if you think you can find a better one and save some cash that's a big gamble. Better the devil you know.

I know if I was in the same situation it would have to be silly money for anyone to prize my mk1 from me!

Don't do it Jacob!

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

Kins you are right been having a look around on the web sites wagenwheels are asking ?4995.00 for a silver Campaign which has been up for sale for the last year or so think there prices are a bit high.

would love one in Lhasa green as that was the first Gti I owned back in 1989 but the MK1 I've got needs very little doing to it.

OK the mk1 is not for sale I would regret it.

Yes! You've made the right decision mate.

There are plenty of cars for that kind of money that would put a smile on your face.  I really think thats a good offer, I've never paid more than ?1300 for a Mk1 Golf.

My mate who just sold his paid just ?900 for it and it had a fully rebuilt engine and came with a bucket load of spares.  Maybe we are all too tight up north - lol.

I've had an X-plater with an overbore and hepolite racing pistons for ?400.

If I had ?2500 to spend I'd be tempted to take it over to France where it will buy a perfectly servicable (and fiarly uniquie) Mk1 Golf GTI 16-S - those things are balistic and rarer than any Campaign.

Is that the Oettinger 16v crossflow? Do you really think ?2.5k would buy you one? 8O

I agree with kins, well done for keeping it. If on the other hand you had a better one already lined up, it would be  ideal  :D

Cheapest I've ever seen a 16-S was the equivenet (in French francs) of ?2100.

They rev to 8000rpm and have a baffles sump as standard, along side the crazy cylinder head (with inlet manifold to die for) full body kit and ATS 15" wheels.

A few points: firstly the 16s is extremely rare and only in lhd.  If (and you won't) you could manage to find one, it would a few multiples of that 2.5k!  It is very easy to buy a cheapish mk1 GTI for under 2 grand, no worries.  However, the Campaign is MUCH more sort after.  Whether or not its worth the extra is another point.  I've seen rusty sheds of campaigns without engines going for not much less than 700 quid.

My latest Mk1 Golf is a Campaign GTI with a 130bhp TSR head on it and all the right bits, swapped it for my BMW 318iS (which I'll not tell you how much I paid for 'coz it was cheap too - lol).

You swapped a 318i for a campaign! You jammy sod!
