Have a little faith there Paul!
For registration reasons rather than anything else - all cars coming into a scrappie are normally notified to DVLA as permanently scrapped, thus making reregistration for the road, impossible.

Great to see a young-un interested in the good old mk1!!! You've got good taste. Welcome to the site and let me know if you want a list of sites to check

Paul's got the general facts right, but he may not be right in your case. See if there is a V5 with it, and decide if you could realistically repair it. How much would they be after?
The swallowtail on ebay could've quite easily ended up in a scrapyard - if it was and had a V5 would you walk away Paul?

If you're going to ask me personally, then yes, I'd walk away, not from being in a scrappie but because I already have 4 cars. Yes its true, sometimes reasonable cars end up in a scrappy and are perfectly good as projects. However, normally there's a good reason why they've ended up there. More so a Mk1 Golf, scrappies aren't daft and they know the intrinsic value in an older car such as this. So it would normally never enter the scrapyard, yet alone be offered/resold from here to the general public.
Projects in general? To fix something, is always going to cost more than you first think, and probably more than had you bought a working car. But you get the benefit that particular area is now 'sorted' and should prove trouble free for a while. Secondhand parts are handy to save money but don't offer nearly the reassurance with new parts, but you can make savings if you're patient and careful with your purchases.
I just said to avoid cars from a scrappy as a generalisation and there's exceptions to the rule as explained above.
Best source of a cheap car if you're 15, is probably a spares/repairs one off eBay or here, where someone doesn't have the time to commit to it and has gone and bought another car to get themselves transport again, thus has lost interest in the Mk1 Golf. Probably a few on ebay, they tend to all have some fault or other on there!
