Selling your mk1 (

Post

Hay folks,

I've been forced to sell the only thing I have left that gives me joy. I don't want to but….we're buying a house (with a garage). Anywho,I put my mk1 on eBay last Friday at 10am by 10am the next morn I had 22 messages,a phone full of text messages and countless stupid calls.

My point being..

Do only stupid people browse ebay? Where the heck do they come from. I've had..

"swap for combo van"
"96 Honda civic"
"track bike?"

At this point I edit my add and highlighted "no px"
Then
will I drive it to Aberdeen? To VIEW"
Will I take 1500,2200
"I'm skint,I'll have to save up"
"hi nice car is it still for sale?"

"Yes" I reply..

"great I'm in Bournemouth and I don't have enough money" (why bother texting me?)

the best one..a guy in Nottingham presses buy it now without seeing it..then decides to view it (doesn't buy it because the roof isn't shiny and the engine bay finish isn't what he expected,he wanted it as a wedding car, what the heck. ) I wasn't bothered at the time..but now I've thought about…

These days I don't put my mobile number on an eBay advert. In fact, I don't rate eBay for selling cars any more at all.

It's crazy isn't it. I've used (am currently) ebay as classified for selling cars but not auction anymore, always been a waste of time.

I don't know why people do this. Chudd from here had sold his MK1 VT recently, he had someone offer to pay half now and then pay half next year!!! LOL

I guess it's easy to hide behind an email or a text message so people just try and push their luck on the off chance you say yes!

Good luck with the sale anyway, sorry you have to see it go ;)

I for a £60 bill from ebay…WHAAAAT? Because the idiot pressed buy it now. Ebay is pointless. It favours the buyer always.

half next year? Wonder if its the same guy that offered me an MGZR or the px for his horse box guy.

Just like being in your average Car Dealership!
99% of people you meet (as a salesperson) are going to waste your time, big time.
But that's the maths my friend and it don't change.
Your mistake as 'Hairyarse' said was to leave a contact number, that's a big no,no if you don't mind me saying this day and age.

Long story short for you as an example of time wasters (but not the same), but I remember vividly a Gentleman coming into our VW Dealership (long time ago). I gave him the works, he was looking at the new Golf Mk2 and I mean one month after it's it's launch.

Can't say how many hours of the next two months I spent with him.
Taking different models to his house, test drives (Family test drives), parking it in his garage.

He came back time and time again to negotiate the sale price, the P/X, extras etc…
We finally shook hands as he was going to go the Bank to arrange a Bankers Draft (no contract as I'd spent so much time with the Guy I actually trusted him).

Two weeks later and I'd heard nothing from him, not a word. So I called him and very nicely said, is everything OK be I've not heard from you?
He replied, "Oh hi Mike, no everything is fine but I just decided to buy a Nissan.  :o
Of course I was some what surprised and asked why?
He said and I don't joke, "Well I remember what the Germans did during the War!"

He bought a Japanese car!

I rest my case mate.  O_o
For those who wrongly think I might be a little old fashioned, it's a true story and I have lived in Austria for the last 19 year Happily married to an Austrian wife and I own both a Nissan and a VW Golf Mk1 of course.

Good luck with the sale.

The world is full of morons mate. eBay usually attracts them

I'm only on eBay as it gives me such a wide audience to sell bits and bobs too. I've relisted a set of wheels about 5 times now. they've sold each and every time but always to a bunch of morons or people who didn't read the advert properly.

Try gumtree though, had 10 people contact me about the mk2 golf i'm selling, asking if I would ship the car to Nigeria if they paid through Paypal, asking if i'd sawap for £300 rot boxes, aswell as your regular sarcastic chavs that threaten to "batter you m8" for sending an equally sarcastic response.

Personally if I'm advertising a classic like a mk1, sticking it in an enthusiast magazine/forum would be a good bet, smaller customer base but less eejits/chancers!

Ebays full of dreamers and time wasters as said, but the one main advantage it has is the wider audience. Most head straight to ebay to buy anything these days

Gumtree,I put my cabby on there a few years ago. Nigeria/Slovakia was the fave destination if I gave them account details to deposit…hmm.

My golf has been on ebay a week now,7 people promised to turn up. 27 calls with stupid questions…one asked what am M.K.1 golf was (as in M.K. Not mk1) mental. Nottingham buy it now guy is by far the worste.

Ahhh it's not the original colour,I wanted to store it for the future.

Absolutely mental. Forums are better I've noticed but everyone seems to be in Truro or Aberdeen.

 yeah true with parts for sale on here and eBay usually being the other end of the country to where you are  :'(  :'(  :'(

It works both ways though. As I buyer you can type out a decent range of questions that the seller only needs to copy, paste and reply to:

What colour is it?
Red

For example.

I usually get quarter of my questions answered in a single paragraph that's full of spelling and grammar mistakes.

The Internet has also let people try and charge a fortune for tat. If a vgc bike exhaust is £250 then surely a crash damaged one that requires a resleve is the same price?

That's exactly what I have done (ref, question). I put a list of the most common stupid question/replies on the ebay add page along with a link to my thread on here. I still get.."anymore pics".

I've recently sold a car on ebay. Strangely enough when I was selling the car normally I had no response. After I discovered it had a bent con-rod and relisted it spares or repair I was inundated with offers (most actually genuine). I ended up selling the car for some fairly sensible money considering it's ailment. I have come to the conclusion that people will go bid crazy on a perceived bargain but anything you are trying to sell for on the button money forget ebay as they just aren't interested.

Oh yeah you get the proper muppets all coming out of the woodwork as well lol.

That's a good point. I put my old trusty pug 206 on for 99p start,it was battered with dents on every panel and had been to Barcelona and back countless times. It went for £700…I expected £300 at the most. I tempted to do it with my mk1.

i still got stupid questions though grrr
