Screenwash & Rear Footwell Advice

Hello!

I'm a new member, and have a few problems I'm sure you guys could help with!….I've only had the car for a couple of months…

1. Filled up my screenwash yesterday, and checked it today (after noticing nothing was coming out) and the bloody this is empty! Now obviously, this implies some sort of leak. Any comments on how to fix? Or how much I'm looking at for a new tank?

2. This is bizarre. When it rains, I get damp rear footwells on both sides…and the water is coming from underneath because the rest of the car is as dry as a bone. Haven't been able to have a good look underneath, but could this be some sort of rust on the undercarriage, or man-made holes as a result of previous leaking / owner?!

Any assistance is appreciated!

Hel  :)

Washer tank bottle, depends on what one you've got, whether it's the huge one for cars with the headlamp washers as well, or the smaller tank for all others. If the plastic is split, there there's not really any way to repair it, but I would check that the motor is pushed onto the tank properly, i think it just gets held in by a big rubber washer, and i would imagine if it's not properly seated, it would leak.

My footwells are like little ponds when it rains, front and back and i was told it was from the back lights. Worth a look making sure these are tight? :starwars:

check the plastic membrane behind your door cards and also the pollen filter housing in the scuttle area, these are your prime suspects for the wet footwells.. pound to a penny its the membrane behind your door cards, it happens a lot on Mk1 and Mk2 Golf :)

Washer bottle repair is possible.

Mine leaked, due to a crack where the bottle was wedged into the metal holding tabs.

I just warmed up the plastic around the crack with a soldering iron (NOT a blowtorch - that would just blow holes in it) and using the tip of the iron sort of welded the two sides of the crack back together.

It's holding out fine so far.NB - the crack was just that - no plastic had broken off - you couldn't use this technique to fill holes.

If you don't own a soldering iron, the cost of getting one will probably equal the cost of buying a new washer bottle…….

I had a problem with damp rear footwells too.

I was beacuse the rear lights leaked and dripped into the boot and down into the footwells.

I fixed it by taking off the the rear lights, cleaned the seals… used sealant and sealed the seals to the lights and then then sealed them to the shell of the car. Jobs a good un!

I would start there first, Best of luck! :D

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D
