Respray opinions

Hello again :) ,

I need a bit of advice concerning the future respray of my c diesel. Is it unadvisable to spray a non-GTi five door in black - ie. not one of the colours that were available for non-GTi's? I'll be respraying in the near future and thought about a change from the 'gambia red', not very inspiring original colour, to black, which would double-up as a good cover for a multitude of sins! (Someone before me has hand-painted the lower body under the front and rear bumpers in black!) so at least it would match on the top if it was all this colour! Although its not all that noticeable-just annoying to me!

I've had a look at sandmans' resprayed 5 door black non-Gti in the gallery and it looks perfectly fine in this colour in my opinion. I have no plans to sell the car in future so I'm not bothered if it's not the original colour and I doubt it would ever be show condition anyway! Is it an okay idea to do this do you think? I dont want to go ahead and regret it if it ends up looking stupid, but would like to have a great looking colour which will detract from the underside DIY job and tie it in with the rest of the car! I'm not sure I could sort it out any other way.
I'll await your opinions! Cheers

If it's your car and you want it black, then why not (!)  Trouble with black is that it shows every imperfection going (ie, would highlight the multitude of sins you talk about rather than hide them). I think I'd be more inclined to keep it original, but it's your car

The 5-doors seem to suit dark colours the best - there used to be one locally that was painted Lhasa green and it looked excellent!

paint

Diesel geezer, stick to the origional colour, when you open the bonnet, the boot or the doors they will still be red………now that will make it look a right shed,if you have a paint job, remove the door handles, the lights, the rubber trims, the badges, and the screen if you have the time, paint shops are not bothered about masking a 83 car to perfection
Cheers bert

Thats not a rod knockin, its a diesel stupid! floppy top and 1 tin top

…mines a 5door black non gti and im pretty sure its original colour. anyways i along with most people who have seen it rekon it looks pretty slick in black. if its sprayed properly i shouldnt think u could see red inside or inder the bonnet if its bare metal???  i had some panels done and its all quality. definatly say black!

I would certainly get the inner bits of the car done including the inside of the doors, the boot sides and under the bonnet - I agree it would look a mess without it all done properly!    And I'll go for the most thorough job I can get in terms of taking all the trim/seals etc off to get into every nook and cranny with the black paint.
Thanks for the advice! I'll come to a final decision soon.

I might spray each panel a different colour like GTIMAD's diesel in the for sale section! That'll turn some heads! And it'll mean I dont have to decide on ONE colour!

Always get your painter to do the door shuts - otherwise it just looks awful.  Just underseat the inside of the engine bay and wheel arches…

Nowt wrong with black panels - loads of stuff runs them (Lancia Fulvia HF, Tickford Capri, etc)
