Also we don't really need an estate any more so I was thinking as we are also doing more miles per year now we have 2 kids who need running about that we should get a diesel.
Having never owned a diesel I'm a bit in the dark about how far the fuel efficiency has come on and how much fun you can have with one in terms of minor mods to wake it up a bit.
I have read there are some Golfs (perhaps MK4's of 5's) that can be remapped to about 200bhp?? for more fun and still return a decent MPG.? What would you guys recommend?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers

Honda Civic CDTi! There a pretty wacky looking motor, or a SEAT Leon FR TDI, my boss had one of them and it was awsome!! really shifted and looked really smart, especially in black!! I think it was 180BHP as standard, but they can perform in excess of 200BHP Chris
Hadn't really considered either of them tbh mate. Is the Seat mostly VW still?

Seat Leon FR diesel as said before, had a 55 plate and it was ace.
BMW 118d m sport, had a coupe and a 3 dr hatch- loved them. Or 120d and the best is twin turbo 123d, rapid car and 40mpg.

They have a range of diseasel engines, ranging from 90bhp to 150bhp.
I have a Bora (essentially a Golf) with a not-all-that-standard 115bhp engine which easily sees 50mpg on my commute. The golfs, being slightly lighter, may be even more economical, depending on your throttle position.
The MK5 is much more refined as a car, but with a price tag to match, £7k will get you a top-spec GTTDI but it will still have a few miles on it, and personally I don't like the look of them.
IMO, I would spend £3.5-£4k on a bloody good mk4, with either the 130bhp Pd engine, or the 150bhp. Tunable to about 200bhp after a re-map, EGR delete, front mount intercooler and exhaust - very quick, reliable, good handling run-around.
