I think that the point should not be "don''t buy it", but more "buy it if you want, but be aware of the details, and make sure that you pay a fair price"

A common phenomenon on eBay - on the good side for the seller, no reserve means cheaper listing costs, but a high opening bid discourages people from making a bid.
Putting a low opening bid (eg: 99p) attracts bidders, but you need to protect yourself with a (costly) reserve otherwise, with only one bid, you could end up selling a car for 99p 8O
