private plate selling?

Right my golf has a private number plate and i was wondering if the car it comes from has to have an MOT to sell it or do you only need to own the car.
Dean told me otherwise but im not to sure (sorry mate)

As Bert said, car has to have an MOT, the plate then goes on "RETENTION"
to be sold, or held on to, until you have another car to transfer it too.

Takes 6 weeks by post, or 1 day if you do the leg work yourself.

Sold mine on ebay and stated that the buyer had to pay retention/ transfer fees.
It paid for a new hood!
