Polishing

I have just purchased my first car, a white golf cabriolet & was wondering whats the best polish to use.  I have bought 'Turtlewax White Colour Magic Polish'.  Is this stuff ok to use?  Also what can I use on the grill as its looking a little dull?

I've used the same on my white cabbie and it seems OK.  However, I have started using Autoglym products and the results are a lot better.  Another one is Meguiars- more expensive but seems to do the job.  Click on the Volksdevil link on the left to get hints and tips on cleaning/polishing.
For the grill, try either back to black or Autoglym's rubber+vinyl stuff (works for me).  Others swear by black shoe polish

You need to get some G3 or G10 from the motorist discount or a body shop. get a big bucket of water and a water spray.

OH you will need a box of polishing cloths, from a body shop supplier or ebay.

did I mention put a whole day aside, not a suuny one it is easier if it is dull and overcast.

I am a convert to the Meguiars range, it really is good…from the wax & polishes to the cloths and applicators, the whole range is superb and gives stunning results, all i will say is try some of the NXT wax in a tin, its about ?12 from Halfrauds, and the trim detailer for black bumpers etc is second to none, i have used Autoglym and most of the other higher end brands and nothing comes close to the Meguiars, it makes the paint like glass, and if you think your paints really shiney? then get a clay bar, it pulls all the unseen contaminants from the surface of the paint, and its amazing how much unseen grime is there, especially on a white car, you just give the whole car a going over with the clay and the lube detailer then wash it off, and dry it, then polish it and its a smooth as glass to the touch 8)…… no trick photography, it really is that shiney 8)

Looks like I shall be taking the turtlewax back & getting some meguiars polish & autoglym for the grill.  I shall check out ebay for the polishing cloths.

I'll sort the bodywork first & sort the wheels after.

Meguiars to im afraid its top stuff

You need microfibre polishing cloths available from woolies, halfords, almost anywhere really, they do a fantastic job.

if you have a poundland near you pop in thair as thay do 2 microfibre polishing cloths for ?1 ive used them on many cars and had great results every time

Also, while we're on the topic of polishing, I've found the flanelette material used for baby's nappies really good…is there any reason why I shouldn't use this?

clay bar, step 1,2,3 paint cleaner, polish, carnuba wax, nxt wax and gold class.

Meguiars NXT Tech wax, the best stuff I have ever ever used! Apply with the sponge supplied and wipe off with micro fibre cloth! Simple as that.  

beware though, Meguirs is good, very good. I switched from Autoglym last year and it shows up how bad my paint really is. It has a habit of showng up scratches you didn't think were there and even after using various paint renovators and Meguiers scratch detailer I've decided its gonna have to have a respray this year, so be warned Meguiers might be expensive, it delivers the goods, but you'll want to respray the car if there are any imperfections :-(

i mainly use the Meguiars body wash, the superb cotton drying cloth instead of a chamois leather as these scratch your paint!, then the NXT wax in the tin with the foam applicator and buff it with a with micro fibre cloth (bit like terry towel), in between waxes i use the NXT spray polish,  dont forget peeps waxing and polishing are 2 different things 8) if the paints got blemishes no polish in the world will hide it, even mine has some imperfections, i just dont point them out to anyone :roll: :wink:

Excellent, I'm off to get myself kitted up with some Meguiars & some cloths too.  Then off for a driving lesson in the rain.  Can't wait for the weather to clear up so I can get out there & clean & polish the car.  I shall post some photos on here soon.   :mrgreen:

For paint work that feels as soft as a baby's bum use flannelette nappies.  On a serious note, I can't see a problem with that, its the same stuff isn't it?   :dontknow:

Lol, not to worry.

I bought Meguiars Nxt Generation Tech Wax.  Need it to stop rainning so I can try the wax.  I've washed my car twice already, bought her 10 days ago.  Where I practice driving there is (putting it politely) cow excrement everywhere.  How often will I need to use the Meguiars?

…it seems to work alright anyway…

(I also have a lot of cow poo around where I drive - very annoying stuff, but hearing them moo during the day makes up for it)
